Today the student and I started working our way through her textbook in an Algebra 1 review. I started off with chapter 1 from the textbook and we did a few example problems together from each section.

We started off with phonics, which was a bit hard at first because the student had to come up with words that matched a definition, but her vocabulary is improving so she went through it relatively quickly. Her reading aloud has greatly improved! We focused more on math and will continue to do so for the next few lessons so she is ready to start the school year. She went through two fractions lessons and is finding them easy once she understands the examples. She filled out three rows of her multiplication table, and I quizzed her on 2 and 5. We finished up with some multiplication problems. She is really getting the hang of it! Her homework is to fill out two more rows of the multiplication tables and be ready for another quiz on them, and finish the last math problem.

Today we did word building with long vowel a - ay. We also read sentences, wrote words, wrote sentences and read a book with ay words. The student also worked in her school binder. She read a book to me, and I read a book to her.

The student and I covered integration by parts and trig substitution techniques this session. Specifically, we did a few integration by parts examples, including a few that used unique but important tricks. After we worked on integration by parts, we jumped into trig integration. We stuck to examples using sin and cos, and we came up with a solving strategy for these kinds of problems. I was also able to provide him with an algorithm to solve these problems as well as sec/tan integrals. All in all, I felt like we made good progress today and that he has a better understanding of the material.

We worked on analogies by analyzing the relationships. I sent a practice worksheet as a reference. As math is the student's weak area, we focused on various math problems using the SSAT practice exam. We finished with brainstorming a writing prompt.

During today's session, the student and I worked on chapters 1-5 by playing a board game made for reviewing concepts. She had the option to opt out of hard math problems using a "Get out of a math problem card," but she did not use it and decided to solve all the problems.
