Tutoring review by Amy in Auburn, NY
I reviewed with the student her 4th grade math homework, which was focusing on fractions, more specifically, being able to identify the relationship, which is larger/smaller, between two different fractions. She had a general knowledge of math vocabulary, numerator/denominator/greater than/less than etc. but can continue to improve on how the vocabulary terms relate to specific problems. She responded well to the use of manipulatives as well as a white board. She seems to be successful with visual and kinesthetic opportunities to solve math problems. She struggled most with deciding what information was needed (are we looking at the numerator or denominator) to be able to complete a problem independently without prompting. She did great when we processed the problem and broke it down step by step, with prompting from me. Overall, the session went great. By the end, she was able to complete a problem independently and was able to explain how she got her answer. It seems as though retention of the concept or how to solve a problem can still improve. She had a great attitude and was wonderful to work with. She was focused and engaged for the entire hour. She worked very hard, and it was apparent that she really wanted to do find the right answer and get it correct!

Today we worked on the Quadratic Equation! (-b±sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/2a = x. We reviewed parabolas, finding the vertex, y-intercept, symmetric point (to the y-int), and the roots, and manipulating the general form of the parabolic function to vertex form and vice versa. I also went over how the quadratic formula is found through completing the squares of the general form of the parabolic formula (ax^2 +bx + c).

We reviewed some of the concepts being explored in an upcoming quiz. The student did an excellent job of preparing for this session by working on many of the problems prior to our meeting. We reviewed these questions and worked on several other questions related to examining how to determine if there are significant differences between means and proportions respectively. I left her with an example to use to address a word problem that she'd had some difficulty with.

The student and I started the lesson by going over his Math homework, and being especially mindful of his writing clarity and neatness. We reviewed some concepts with place value, and then moved on to his other subjects. He completed a vocabulary workbook assignment, and walked me through his completed Christopher Columbus social studies assignment. We finished the last 30 minutes of the lesson with more review of place value, and he continued to practice writing his work clearly.

We worked on preparing for the student's quiz tomorrow. We worked through lots of different factoring problems, as well as synthetic division and polynomials. She needs to work on memorizing her special cases for factoring, but does very well at solving.

The student said he had a good day today - and he did a great job with tutoring as well. He worked for a bit on finishing his reading questions (the story was about Mt. Everest and climbing). He then completed his math worksheet; the first side was mainly reducing fractions and re-writing ratios. The next side involved solving for missing variables in a given ratio. He then completed the 4 word problems: subtracting mixed numbers, finding radius or circumference of circles, and calculating base of a triangle. He did a great job with all of it.
