I am a Sophomore college student currently studying Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University. I strongly encourage and aims to motivate high school students to become leaders in their careers as engineers, expand the idea of engineering as a means of improving the quality of life, and increase the diversity of the engineering profession.

Throughout my life, I have been thankful for the quality of education I have received. As a tutor, I plan to continue this tradition of excellence in instruction, working diligently to provide my students the best opportunity to succeed in their coursework.

I love teaching Reading, Spanish, and French. My favorite language is Spanish because of its musicality, spirit, and consciousness. My philosophy of teaching is that I must necessarily explore what you like about the subject you are learning, and then amplify that to include all aspects of that subject. I adore watching students fall in love with their latest acquisition of language, and celebrate that to the highest level of their competence. It opens a new window to one's abilities, and also establishes a history of small successes that, in succession, lead to victory.

I have a diverse work background in biology and natural resources, from fighting wildfires to working as a research technician in a Pharmacology lab to wildlife management. I enjoy learning about and teaching all the sciences (including math); I also like music, exercise, and almost anything outdoors. I believe the most important skills to pass on to students are confidence in themselves, and the ability to think critically while solving problems on their own. My tutoring is entirely built around those two principles.I have 2 semesters' worth of teaching at the college level as well as extensive experience in one-on-one and group tutoring scenarios. I taught a total of 3 sections of College Algebra (MATH 101) at the University of Kansas to undergraduate students in the 2012-13 academic year as an employee of the Kansas Algebra Program; I was responsible for curriculum development, lecture and group work during class time, assigning and grading homework, developing a policy on late work and other behavioral expectations, maintaining office hours, and prompt and professional communication with students via e-mail and private meetings outside of class time. Other responsibilities of this employment include staffing a tutoring room where students from College Algebra or Intermediate Mathematics classes (my students and others) could sit down for tutoring as individuals or study groups, proctoring and grading class exams, and attendance of staff meetings on a weekly basis. I feel that this appointment has given me many tools as a tutor, instructor, and even as a learner myself.My applied experience tutoring and leading classes at a variety of levels combined with my knowledge of student learning styles and pedagogy make me an excellent candidate for tutoring assignments. I have the experience, knowledge, confidence, and patience to manage the needs of a wide variety of students in many fields of both mathematics and the natural sciences. As an undergraduate at a liberal arts University I gained proficiency in a wide variety of subjects including: organismal biology, molecular biology and microbiology, cell structure and function, anatomy and physiology, ecology and evolutionary biology, physics, organic and inorganic chemistry, physics, algebra, calculus, and statistics. I truly enjoy helping students become better learners, in the classroom and for the rest of their lives. I am going back to school in the Fall (2015) to finish a teaching certificate so that I can become a secondary science teacher.

I received my B.S. in Chemistry in 2013 from California Polytechnic State University. I then went on to receive my M.S in Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. While obtaining my Masters' degree, I worked as teaching assistant for biochemistry lectures and microbiology lab courses, and found my love of teaching. Due to my positive student evaluations as a TA, I was offered an adjunct lecturer position for the 2015-2016 school year as the Microbiology Lab and Experimental Biology Lab instructor. I am now working to apply to Physician Assistant programs in New York. While I have primary taught college students, I also have experience working with elementary school students. While obtaining my B.S., I helped establish a program where myself, fellow students, and faculty members of the chemistry department would travel to local elementary schools to perform science experiments demonstrating basic scientific concepts to students. I am always eager to teach, and I believe my teaching style is helpful for students of all ages.I grew up playing soccer for 14 years in New Hampshire (my home state), and continued playing intramural soccer in college, and I have now moved on to coaching. In my spare time, I also enjoy reading, hiking, paddle boarding, and am currently learning how to play the guitar.

I am a graduate of Ramapo College where I received my bachelors degree. I am currently a candidate for my Masters in Elementary Education at William Paterson University. I have worked in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 5th grade, and I really enjoy working with students who struggle with English and Language Arts. I have very fond memories as a child of visiting the library in the summer and having a general love for reading. I find that students who struggle in these areas continue to struggle in all areas of their education. I take great pride in working with my students and making valuable changes in their education lives. In my spare time I enjoy cooking and hot yoga.

Last year, I served with City Year: a not-for-profit organization aimed at lowering the high school dropout rate through interventions to improve academics, behavior, and attendance. I worked in an English classroom teaching high school freshmen while tutoring Algebra and Geometry everyday after school. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Literature, Algebra, and History. I am a firm proponent of equal education opportunity for all as it is absolutely necessary for anyone to succeed. I try to encourage my students to have an appreciation for their education as it is a privilege they have and millions of others do not.
