We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Tutoring review by Jesse in Hampton, VA
The student and I looked at his work from math class again, as we had focused on his college essay and SAT. The student had trouble solving certain equations involving radicals, but I think he improved by the end of the meeting. The student and I also looked at an outline he had been working on for an essay for his English class.

Tutoring review by Vincent in Hampton, VA
Today, the student had a review of her previous material in Algebra, to prepare for her upcoming standardized Math test. For the most part, she remembered the different kinds of math necessary to complete the given questions, but she did have difficulties with systems of equations. We spent time going over how to identify systems, and how to know when to substitute or when to set them equal to one another. I encouraged her to look over the review later to ensure she remembered what she did for the systems. In addition, we discussed strategies to overcome test anxiety.

We reviewed angles created by two intersecting lines, vertical angles, right angles, straight angles, and adding angles in geometry and units, the SI prefixes, and the chapter 2 equation list in physics. Since both of the student's classes just took tests, we started to look ahead at what they will be covering next. We talked about 3D definitions for lines and planes and looked at picking out parallel, skew, and intersecting lines that make up a 3D object. In physics, we talked about how projectile motion is similar to the linear motion problems from the previous chapter. He is getting better at remember the standard units for distance, velocity, and acceleration, and he is doing well at identifying the different variables in the physics equations and choosing which equation to use to solve a particular problem.

Today we kept practicing multiple step problems and the student did great in these problems; he missed only one problem. The rest of them were correctly solved. Next session we'll do a test of this and some other operations to access his performance.

Tutoring review by John in Hampton, VA
The student and I covered a couple of worksheets that were the study material she needed for a quiz. The topics that were covered dealt with adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing of functions, recognition of whether or not a graph was a function, determining a function with just points, range and domain of functions, function restrictions, composite functions, and synthetic division. She seemed to be struggling the most with the composite functions and where to start in order to solve them and I showed her how to start from the inside of the composite and work to the outside. She seemed to pick up the concepts rather quickly as she remembered some of the examples that were covered in class.

The student's reading fluency with the first couple of books is near 100%. In this session we also learned new vocabulary with her set of verb flashcards. We then completed a lesson on her language app, where she advanced to next level.
