GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment Tutoring FAQ
Whether you are currently a student or you have been working in the professional world for some time, the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) can present you with numerous challenges that you must overcome in order to impress your target schools with excellent scores. While many students focus their attention on the test's Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative, and Verbal sections, it is important to prepare for the Analytical Writing Assessment as well. Students may assume that they do not have to study for this section if they succeeded on the writing portions of standardized exams like the ACT and SAT. However, the GMAT's Analytical Writing Assessment is likely very different from writing sections you have completed in the past. While other tests' writing portions may ask you to respond to a short prompt by drawing on personal evidence and examples from general knowledge, the GMATs Analytical Writing Assessment tests your ability to dissect the logic of a short paragraph and identify the gaps and errors that make it weak. In doing so, this section assesses your analytical, reading, and writing skills in an evidence-oriented context. Sufficient preparation for this can be guided by a private GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment tutor.
Picking apart an argument's fine details may sound intimidating, but learning to critique arguments is a skill that you can strengthen over time. Attempting to improve on your own, however, can be a difficult task. As you practice responding to prompts, how are you supposed to identify your weakest areas? It is nearly impossible to realize that you are unwittingly missing a logical issue in prompts if you are trying to self-diagnose your own skills.
Varsity Tutors can help you streamline your GMAT test prep process by helping you connect with experienced tutors. Personal GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment tutoring is available nationwide and can assist you in improving your critical skills efficiently and effectively. Your GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment tutoring experience is tailored to your needs and can be fine-tuned as you fill in skills gaps and perhaps discover other areas to build upon. Your tutor can guide you through focused exercises and provide advice as someone who has succeeded at meeting the challenge you are facing. Additionally, all tutoring takes place in a one-on-one environment, so you can have questions answered as soon as they arise and receive immediate feedback on your work. There is no need to review material you already understand, and your lesson plan can be adjusted to spend more or less time on any topics as needed. We began our session by reviewing any problematic circle problems from chapter 26. Following this, we reviewed the ETS problems that the student worked on. In the course of going through this, we covered several kinds of problems, giving focus to coordinate geometry. I assigned him to re-do the circle problems that he missed, problems from c.28 (coordinate geometry), questions from 23 (probability, which he was not able to work on), and 2 ETS sections.
The student and I met for another session of exam tutoring. We first went over a practice exam he had taken. He had scored 162 on reading and 154 on math. After going over the math questions that he had missed, we then focused on an area of weakness for him: coordinate geometry. We went over various concepts including the distance formula and how to find the slope of a line. We ended the session by testing his timing.
We worked on math again this time. The student is steadily improving through the sections. She is beginning to trust her ability to solve the problems. Most of the time she can at least start the problem correctly, so we will continue to work on the following steps with her.
Today, the student and I practiced some more reading-comprehension passages; she is starting to improve on these items as well, although the more subjective questions are still proving a significant challenge. As a change of pace, at her request, we also took some time to skim over some of the standardized test's quantitative material, to refresh her math skills.
Today we practiced sample GRE quantitative questions involving permutations, combinations, and probability. We also reviewed some strategies for the verbal section, including pre-reading the passage and using context clues as well as etymology to figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word.
Today, the student and I went over last week's homework. Great job. I think he's got the basic math down. Our Arithmetic lesson covered fractions, decimals, ratios, and percentages. We also began our Sentence Equivalence lesson.
