We focused particularly on combining text evidence with logical conclusions, experimental design, and anticipating key information during reading. As with Math, student showed potential to score in the low 30s when controlling for outside factors. The student is very bright, and her experience in AP-level courses shows when anxiety is removed as an obstacle. We therefore concluded with a conversation about how to enter the test with the right physical and mental composure, and cultivating awareness of the standardized test format (and how to approach it with confidence).

We had our first meeting today. We spent the day studying ACT science. We made it through two of the three types of questions on the science ACT and most of the third. I assigned a science section of the ACT, and next time we will work on a different topic.

We worked heavily on the ACT science section today. The student spent some time working on his own while I timed his progress. He is still taking too much time to finish a section by about ten minutes so we need to work on better strategies to allow him to work faster. I noticed that he often misreads questions or skips over key details so we are also trying to work on making sure he not only understands the main idea of a science passage but doesn't lose sight of what is being asked of him. I assigned the student to work on a full length practice test and time himself this weekend.

The student and I continued working through the science portion of the ACT. He scored a 22. Compared to his initial score of a 12, this is indicative of significant progress. When we went over the questions he answered incorrectly, he was often able to easily find the correct answer. The student will want to work on reading the questions more closely and more completely. There is little doubt he has the capabilities of score at or near 30. We will focus on science for the next three sessions and then begin reviewing the English portion of the test. Overall, the student has come a long way since our first session. So long as he can stay focused and positive, he will do very well come September.

We talked about her goals and general test-taking skills before launching into Science. I think she's capable of doing very well on the ACT given her reasoning skills and intelligence, and after walking through some problems and explaining different approaches, she seems much more confident and better-prepared. I'm excited to see how she does on her practice test she has for homework!

The student is definitely gaining familiarity with the test and confidence in her skills on the science section. She is able to scan the articles and move through the questions at a good pace (she averages a little less than a minute per question).
