How can a tutor help you with summer tutoring?

Although kids look forward to summer vacation, the time off may create a knowledge gap when school starts again. In fact, at most schools, the first six weeks of class are spent relearning material from the previous year. This gap may mean that children not only have a tougher time learning new things, but that school becomes associated with repetition. Varsity Tutors understands how important it is to continue your child's education over the summer, so the educational directors at Varsity Tutors may help you connect with summer tutors in Boston.

All of the tutors that our educational directors may connect you with in Boston, MA, are skilled in teaching summer learning skills. Your child may be matched with a tutor based on subjects they need help with, as well as topics they are interested in. Summer learning may be fun when the subjects are geared toward your child's interests. Tutors encourage your child to read challenging books about subjects your child finds interesting, and sessions are based on the learning styles that work best for your child. Vocabulary and math skills don't have to be taught in a traditional way - they may be turned into a game!

Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Boston, MA Summer tutoring
The student and I had an excellent session. We began by going over some practice grammar/mechanics exercises that she had completed at school. We reviewed various grammar/spelling rules (e.g., that words like spy, fry, cry, etc. drop y and have -ied in the past tense). We then did practice reading comprehension testing. We went over all the material and discussed any issues she had (e.g., knowing how to identify the main idea of a passage). We also reviewed some basic test taking skills throughout the session (e.g., process of elimination, glancing at questions before reading passage to know what to look for as you read, etc.). Good session!

The student and I went through the first draft of her short paper assignment today. She is a generally good writer, and I had very little in the way of substantial criticism to send her way. She really just needs to focus on some word choice and awkward phrasing issues, as well as beef up her vocabulary a little. Her style and approach are perfect for philosophy--straightforward, no frills, just the facts. Having a good grasp of crisp, concise writing is essential for doing well in a philosophy course, so I have great confidence in her prospects for this paper. As usual this meeting with the student went quite well and I look forward to working with her again.

The student and I discussed introductory topics in microbiology. We went over the differences among the four classes of biomolecules: carbohydrates, fats/lipids, nucleic acids, and proteins. We learned the vernacular associated with these molecules and what the general structure of these molecules looks like. We reviewed chemistry concepts concerning types of chemical bonds. We also learned the differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, and how microorganisms are classified. All the PowerPoint slides to date were reviewed. The student has a firm grasp of the material.
