I'm a senior at Washington University majoring in Systems Engineering and Finance. I'm also currently in the application process for a Masters degree from Washington University in Data Analysis and Statistics. When I'm not studying, I like to spend as much time as possible in the great outdoors! I absolutely love being outside, and I jump at every opportunity to go hiking, biking, camping, you name it. :)I've worked as a Teaching Assistant in both business and engineering classes at Wash U., so I have experience working closely with students to help them succeed. I've also been on the receiving end of tutoring, and I know how valuable it is! I love working with people -- and I love math! -- so I'm very excited about the opportunity to be a Varsity Tutor.

I spent my career working in journalism, first as a writer and later as an editor. This work helped me develop a crisp, clear writing style and an appreciation for the finer points of grammar. As an editor I particularly enjoyed helping new journalists improve their writing skills, which sparked my interest in tutoring students in writing, English and reading. Reading goes hand in hand with writing; it is key to succeeding in school and in life. Each student is unique and learns best in different ways. I will develop a customized tutoring plan with measurable goals. My goal will be to make learning interesting and enjoyable, and to help students gain confidence in their abilities. I earned my undergraduate degree in journalism at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and a master's in business administration from Lindenwood University in Belleville, IL.

I am a social, honest and enthusiastic person. I love teaching young minds. Help them to understand the world of chemistry and to show them how it can be applied. Sparking their enthusiasm for science in every way possible.I started my career teaching and doing research at the University of Groningen. Then I went to different companies and research institutes. I worked in a startup and I had my own company for some time. All this gave me a very broad experience and practical knowledge that I bring into the classroom with me. It makes it easy for me to relate to the students and to give them examples that they can truly understand.Because every student is different I use various methods to teach chemistry. Finding the right way for every student so they can really grasp science is a big challenge that I really like. I continuously look for new IT tools, like Kahoot, Flipping the Classroom and Stop-motion, to apply in the classroom. This way children can 'play' and learn at the same time and are also able to learn when they want.I strongly believe that it is not enough to just do a good teaching job. In order for the children to try their best and really get inspired it is very important to have a good relationship with them based on mutual respect. Without this it will be hard to be a good teacher for them. So, the social part of a teacher's job is very important to me. Talking with them about their weekend, what inspires them, their plans for the future studies or even a baseball game contributes to building mutual respect. It is one of the aspects of being a teacher that comes naturally to me and what makes me a great teacher. When I look back at my own time at school I remember the teachers that went the extra mile, that were genuinely interested in you or that always new how to really get to you. I believe I am that kind of teacher and I work hard to improve myself in every way I can to become even better. The interaction with the students, to really see them grow and help them on their way by making science their favorite topic are the main reasons I became a chemistry teacher. And I am very happy with that choice.

I received my high school diploma from South Elgin High school and now will be entering my junior year in college at Loyola University Chicago. I am currently working toward a biology degree with a minor in finance. My tutoring experience consists of working at Kumon with children from the grade level of kindergarten all the way up to college. I really enjoy working with kids because I feel teaching students a difficult concept by making it easier to understand solidifies my own knowledge and makes understanding concepts easier for the student. I also tutored at Loyola University Chicago in the library in my free time with any subjects I had already taken and became familiar with. My experience with working with children has taught me a lot about patience because it is important to acknowledge that some students require more training and practice than others and that it is no one's fault. Some subjects that I tutor include: Biology, organic chemistry, physics, genetics, college chemistry, geometry, algebra 1, algebra 2, calculus 1, pre-calculus, elementary school math, and middle school math. My favorite subject to tutor would be math because it is something that I feel it is very logical and straightforward. Math has always been one of my favorite subjects growing up because I would perform the best in class due to my level of understanding with the concepts. I never struggled with math and if I was unsure about a problem, seeing it done once would set me up to solve similar problems without any trouble. Teaching a student math comes with understanding steps and why steps are taken to retrieve an answer. I feel that once this is mastered, a student should be capable to problem solve. My tutoring style has been known by others as very calm and collected. My coworkers and boss would always set me aside to do tutoring over other tasks because my way of teaching was never hurtful or rude in any way. The students would ask to be paired with me because they felt I never rushed them, instead I was there to teach them valuable concepts that would build a foundation on to further more difficult education. I do not like to move on until a student feels they have mastered a subject area because moving on to something new can lead the student to become more frustrated because the foundation is still weak.Outside of the academics, I enjoy to play sports, such as volleyball and badminton. I used to be on the varsity badminton team in high school and it gave me a way to engage in something other than school work all the time. I also am a big fan of music; I enjoy many artists like Justin Bieber and The Weeknd, and would love to be able to go to a concert someday.

I am a retired English teacher with 33 years of teaching English grammar, composition, and literature in two public school districts at the secondary level. I hold both a B.A. degree and M. A. degree in language arts from SIU-Edwardsville, Illinois. For several years I continued academic studies at St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri, where I pursued a doctorate degree in English and American literature. Although I completed all course requirements with a 3.666 average based on a 4.000 scale, I did not select my committee of professors for the requisite oral exams, nor did I produce a dissertation. Some significant circumstances demanded my focus and resolution to such an extent that I never returned to St. Louis University. However, I must admit that I wish I had. From November 1972 to June 1979, I taught English at Sumner High School, where I received seven years of invaluable training and experience in classroom management and curriculum development. The latter part of my teaching career was spent in East St. Louis School District 189 at East St. Louis Senior High School (September 1979-June 2002) and Lincoln Middle School (September 2002-June 2005). I was chairman of the English Department at East St. Louis Senior High for eight academic years. I was blessed to receive teacher awards and recognition variously from St. Clair County, students and parents, and commendations from fellow teachers, counselors, and my principal. I thank God for enabling me to develop a fervent passion and professional integrity that grew stronger and never diminished as an educator! In addition, I am blessed to be effective and successful as a seminary professor. I am currently employed as Professor of Pastoral Theology in the master's program at Anchor Theological Seminary and Bible Institute (East St. Louis extension). I am also a pianist/keyboardist and singer primarily of Christian music at my church and various other Christian venues. For sixteen years I pastored along with my now-deceased wife a non-denominational church, the Agape Family Christian Center in Belleville, Illinois. ("Agape" is a Greek term for God's divine love.) Our three sons were actively involved in every aspect of our Christian ministry. I pledge to help students achieve their stated life goals, and I will relate to each of them with respect and dignity. I pledge to also provide positive feedback and support to motivate them to learn and become proficient in oral and written communication. Accordingly, I will teach functional, standardized English grammar and composition as a tool of effective communication. My emphasis on using critical thinking skills is designed to help students process and evaluate various philosophies and thought patterns prevalent in our world. It is my hope that students engage in independent research in various fields. It is my hope that they each will work to contribute meaningfully to the betterment of all humanity without fear and without apology. Toward these ends, I will urge their parents/guardians to participate meaningfully in their child's educational, social, emotional, psychological, and moral development. I welcome the challenge to inspire my students to maintain a sense of moral urgency and commitment to the highest ideals of our American democracy. I welcome the challenge to motivate them to pay honor, dignity, and respect to others regardless of race, creed, nationality, ethnicity, color, gender, religion, and any other individual distinctions that tend to divide us as a nation. I welcome the challenge to inspire them to be perpetual learners, teachers, philosophers, statesmen, ambassadors, and humanitarians. I will pray that God will undergird their efforts to help change our nation--indeed, our world--for the betterment of all mankind.
