Ann Arbor, MI Summer tutoring
The student and I went over his homework assignments. He did a great job! He had come to see the play I am performing in (Tartuffe), so we took the opportunity to go through the script and identify new words. There were a lot! We then looked at some reviews, and talked about how to write an effective review. We started reviewing all of the vocab flashcards he has made. For homework this week, I'm asking him to write a sentence with as many of those vocab words as he can.

The student and I completed the Chapter 25 reading questions from his civics textbook and studied for a Bible quiz he will take on Friday. He and I discussed key concepts from the readings while answering the questions. For his Bible review, I asked him questions that will be on the quiz, and then we reviewed those questions he answered incorrectly. I also asked him what his challenges were when taking the Bible quizzes, and I gave suggestions on how to do better.

Great session today. The student and I worked on completing an exam on rocks and minerals in Science. Also we finished a power point on Ancient Civilizations and cited our resources in MLA format. The student is working very hard and as always is a pleasure to work with. The student is maintaining A's in all of his classes with the exception of Algebra which will be an A shortly.

The student had some homework tonight that he worked on, including a math worksheet and an online quiz for AP History. He has an AP History Quiz tomorrow covering chapter 27, which is what he practiced with the online quiz this evening. He got a 96% on his online quiz. I also had him complete chapter 3 review questions in his AP History review book. He did well on the multiple choice questions, getting an 84%. We finished scheduling out the rest of his reading and practice problems to get him prepped for his AP exam at the end of May. On Monday next week, we will cover how to outline essays for his AP exam and practice with some examples in the review book. He is doing well!

During this session, I had the student review her homework assignments with me. Then I helped her to study for her Spanish test. I asked her how she usually studied for her test and she said she either covered up the terms/answers to quiz herself or had someone else quiz her. I had her to first identify the English term for the Spanish term (all vocab terms were associated with family or rooms in the home), and then I gave her the English term and had her give me the Spanish term. Then I had her to use the Spanish terms she was least familiar with and write sentences with them. Then I quizzed her again on all the terms. We finished the session by reviewing her Science study guide and I helped quiz her for that upcoming test as well. I also explained and gave her several examples of associations she could make with the terms/concepts and their applications. I told her that the more she was able to connect the concept with something she was already familiar with, then she would be better able to recall and know how to answer test questions. The student seemed very focused. She was also very engaged and responsive!

Today, for our last session together, the student and I reviewed all that we had previously covered together. I prepared a document organizing all of our lessons: general organization, preparing for tests, study guides, reading comprehension, note-taking, and online research. I had prepared a mini-lesson for each of these categories, and she and I went through each together, discussing the different strategies she had learned. It went well. She said that she feels more prepared in school now and that she will be able to use these strategies in the future. We talked about how they are skills she can use not just in middle school, but in high school, as well. I've definitely seen progress in this student in the areas that we've covered, and I think that she will be more confident in her studying from here on out! I really enjoyed working with her!
