I love science!! And hopefully by the end of our study sessions I can achieve the same spark in my students! I am an artist on the side of my contracted chemical work and I also dedicate myself to fitness, all with chemistry/biology in mind. Everything around us can be attributed to almost all the same atoms, just arranged in different configurations. Isn't that crazy? Because of this, I see chemistry/biology as part of everything in life! I am dedicated to learning and very much sympathetic to students who struggle with science because I did at one time too and now I'm a chemist by trade! After all, we are all students at one point and therefore getting answers "wrong" isn't an issue, it's an opportunity to do better and learn something new! Whether it be art, biology, chemistry, entry-level science, or college level I am more than ready to tackle courses that seem overwhelming by taking them apart one concept at a time. Using some fun analogies, videos, and many relatable visual aids, I feel fully prepared to not come off as a lecturer. Instead I am more of an interactive teacher to show each one of my students specialized attention in each of their needs and confusions about their courses. Lets get some cool learning done!

Reading and writing have interested me for as long as I can remember. My parents took us to the library every week to find new books and for story hour. I began writing my own creative fiction stories in 6th grade. My love of discussing and writing about literature and other reading made majoring in English Education a perfect fit. At Bowling Green State University, I gained experience with academic essays by tutoring students through the Writing Center. I worked primarily with first-year students on argumentative essays, but sometimes had the opportunity to work with graduate students on research papers and with English as a Second Language students needing help applying grammar rules.Since 2009, I've been teaching middle and high school Language Arts courses ranging from 6th grade reading through Senior Composition. I help my students to recognize the strengths they already have and use those strengths to improve other areas.I am working toward a Master's Degree in English with a concentration in Rhetoric and Composition at Northern Kentucky University. This will position me to teach first-year composition courses at community and 2-year colleges. It has also provided me with more strategies for teaching writing.

I want to be a positive light for all students, especially those who find school to be difficult. Many times a student has experienced challenges with reading which causes them to not enjoy it as much mostly because it has been hard for them.I am passionate about literacy and I make it my goal to help the students gain a positive reading experience that will foster a love for literacy and learning. Hopefully this positive light will carry over into their future. My experience in working with students is with kindergarten through eighth graders in the school setting. I have been a 5th grade classroom teacher for 10 years, then I served as a 7th and 8th grade teacher for 3 years. More recently I spent 8 years as a Reading Specialist for grades K-4 before becoming a Principal for a K-3 elementary school.I earned my Bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University, then I earned my first Master's degree in Reading Instruction from Aurora University. Recently, I earned a second Master's degree in Educational Administration from Concordia University. My favorite subjects to tutor are Reading, Writing and English Language Arts. I graduated with a Bachelor's of arts in German from Bowling Green State University in the spring of 2014. During my undergraduate program, I spent a year studying abroad in Salzburg, Austria, where I took college classes in German and effectively interacted in German in my daily life.As a tutor, I am trained in current teaching methods and have experience adapting lesson structures to student strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. I am trained in lesson planning, instruction, assessment, and using assessment data to guide further lessons through City Year, Inc. I have used assessments and a quick review question for the last session to tell me what the student still needs help with or if we are ready to move on to something else. As a tutor with City Year, I also gained hands-on experience tutoring a diverse group of students in a variety of subjects and supported students in Algebra and Physical Science classrooms. Additionally, after school, I also started to teach one student the basics of the German language. By the end of the year, we were starting every day with greetings and a simple conversation in German.I am looking forward to sharing the wonders of German and teaching the language, I would also love to tutor algebra as well as middle school science and math. I look forward to working with you.

This is my first experience tutoring students but I have over four years of intensive exam taking experience at university level. I am familiar with a wide variety of subjects in both the arts and sciences. Much of my expertise originates from taking courses at university. Some of the courses I have taken include accounting and business concepts I and II, biology concepts I and II, various math courses, population geography, genetics, etc. My teaching style is laid back and I think it is easier for students to be able to be as up front as they can with me about what they need and their goals. From there, we can get to work and fine-tune as we go.

I am passionate about helping students because I love watching them have that "light bulb" moment. I also believe that a student who does not like school can begin to like school if they get the proper help and guidance in subjects. I have worked with K-3 students and 5th graders. I just graduated college and I am now a licensed teacher. I can tutor elementary math, science, reading, writing, and social studies. My favorite subjects to tutor are writing, reading, and science. These were my favorite subjects when I was in school, and they help lay the foundation for other subjects. If a student is a kinesthetic or visual learner it is also fun to work with experiments or little projects with them to help them grasp concepts.

I use the skills from my minor to break down information in a manageable way; after all, technical writing is all about providing clear, helpful instructions! In 2021, I received my MA in English with a graduate certificate in the theory and practice of teaching college writing. I use this degree to teach English 1101 and English 1102 at a community college in Georgia. I teach traditional and non-traditional students, including many high school juniors and seniors who are dually-enrolled. I specifically enjoy working with writers who lost opportunities to build foundational knowledge due to the COVID lockdowns and digital learning. I also have experience working with English Language Learners and individuals with special needs. I currently work full time as the Director of Programs and Education at a live performance theatre. This job allows me to teach literacy through drama to individuals between the ages of 5 and 100. I believe all students can learn at a high rate given sufficient time and sufficient support.I have taught High School Physics and High School Chemistry for 10 years at a variety of levels. I have found that when students can make connections to real world topics they are much more likely to understand the content in chemistry and physics.I honestly believe that students need a variety of ways to internalize information. For the chemistry course I taught to ESL students, I made podcasts for them with each of the objectives I needed for them to acquire and encouraged them to view these video podcasts to increase their understanding of the content. During classroom time, I would spend the majority of the time making connections to real world situations. These video podcasts were uploaded to a you tube channel fore easy access.

When I first began language teaching in 2001, I will be honest and confess that I mirrored the teacher-centered approach of the "sage on the stage" that my professors had utilized while I was working towards my BA and MA in Spanish. When I began my doctorate at the University of Minnesota in Leadership for Intercultural and International Education, however, that began to change. My doctoral program was designed around the cohort model, which was new to me. In it, we were all considered experts in our field and we were expected to teach each other. I liked the responsibility placed on my shoulders of presenting a designated topic to my peers and professor. In this student-centered approach to learning, I appreciated that the professor served the role of mediator / observer and the students were responsible not only for their own learning, but for presenting accurate information to their peers. That positive experience motivated me to shift my teacher-centered approach to a student-centered approach in my ESL classroom. While I don't have my students instruct the entire grammar point or vocabulary lesson in front of their peers, I do assign a micro lesson to each student that they must review with the class as if they were the instructor. Currently, I am an adjunct Non-Credit ESL and Spanish professor at Compton Community College. In my role, my primary mission is to help students develop their language proficiency. Professionally, I define myself first and foremost as a teacher, and in order to teach effectivelyi.e., foster student learning by serving as guide, resource, and cheerleaderit is essential that I continue to expand my own professional expertise. However, teaching involves more than just the development of skills and the communication of knowledge, and a liberal arts education seeks to nurture the qualities of mind and character which permit students to realize their full potential as contributors to society, informed citizens, and caring and responsible adults. Part of my own responsibility as an educator is to serve as a role model by committing myself to personal growth as well as to professional development. I believe that the personal and the professional are inextricably interwoven in teaching and that both feed and are fed by the teaching in which I am engaged. Students acquire another language most effectively when they are able to use what they are learning to express something meaningful about topics that are relevant to them. I am a member of the TESOL International Association and also subscribe to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages' (ACTFL) emphasis on proficiency-based instruction that prepares students to carry out global functions such as creating with the language by recombining learned material, asking and answering questions on familiar topics, and narrating and describing in major time frames. Whereas second language pedagogy used to distinguish between the "active" skills of speaking and writing and the "passive" skills of listening and reading, the current terminology of "productive" versus "receptive" recognizes the active nature of all four skills. Nevertheless, such a distinction still masks the productive process that takes place when one decodes and interprets an oral utterance or written text. In structuring my language courses, I strive to create and implement activities that enable students to develop all four language skills, with particular emphasis placed on listening. Listening is often overlooked during the first two years of college instruction, but it is essential for student success and is actually the most used skill in immersion and everyday contexts.

I dual majored in History and Political Science while attending Bowling Green State University. As an undergraduate student I was highly involved in campus activities and event planning. I spent much of my time advocating for various groups on campus and working to enrich student life. After graduating I worked for the Department of Defense, Finance and Accounting Service, for a short time. This experience allowed me to apply my scholastic knowledge of bureaucracy to the real world workings of the government. After working to promote the welfare of our service men and women; I decided to further my education and attend graduate school.I enrolled in Earlham College’s Arts and Teaching program where I learned the pedagogy of holistic education. I received a Master’s Degree in Education and I currently hold licensures in Socials Studies in Indiana and Ohio; I have taught in disadvantaged communities for three years, focusing on improving literacy. As a professional educator I have learned that inspiration is the supreme teacher. Understanding is at the core of all learning and learning is only beneficial if understanding is respected as the true teacher, and I a mere instrument for its song.I believe that a teacher must challenge, inspire, and create in her students a sense of wonderment and awe; it is her duty to instill in the pupil the desire to be a lifelong learner, because life is itself an education.
