I want to be a positive light for all students, especially those who find school to be difficult. Many times a student has experienced challenges with reading which causes them to not enjoy it as much mostly because it has been hard for them.I am passionate about literacy and I make it my goal to help the students gain a positive reading experience that will foster a love for literacy and learning. When I first began language teaching in 2001, I will be honest and confess that I mirrored the teacher-centered approach of the "sage on the stage" that my professors had utilized while I was working towards my BA and MA in Spanish. When I began my doctorate at the University of Minnesota in Leadership for Intercultural and International Education, however, that began to change. My doctoral program was designed around the cohort model, which was new to me. In it, we were all considered experts in our field and we were expected to teach each other. I liked the responsibility placed on my shoulders of presenting a designated topic to my peers and professor. In this student-centered approach to learning, I appreciated that the professor served the role of mediator / observer and the students were responsible not only for their own learning, but for presenting accurate information to their peers. That positive experience motivated me to shift my teacher-centered approach to a student-centered approach in my ESL classroom. While I don't have my students instruct the entire grammar point or vocabulary lesson in front of their peers, I do assign a micro lesson to each student that they must review with the class as if they were the instructor. I dual majored in History and Political Science while attending Bowling Green State University. As an undergraduate student I was highly involved in campus activities and event planning. I spent much of my time advocating for various groups on campus and working to enrich student life. After graduating I worked for the Department of Defense, Finance and Accounting Service, for a short time. This experience allowed me to apply my scholastic knowledge of bureaucracy to the real world workings of the government. After working to promote the welfare of our service men and women; I decided to further my education and attend graduate school.I enrolled in Earlham College’s Arts and Teaching program where I learned the pedagogy of holistic education. I received a Master’s Degree in Education and I currently hold licensures in Socials Studies in Indiana and Ohio; I have taught in disadvantaged communities for three years, focusing on improving literacy. As a professional educator I have learned that inspiration is the supreme teacher. Understanding is at the core of all learning and learning is only beneficial if understanding is respected as the true teacher, and I a mere instrument for its song.I believe that a teacher must challenge, inspire, and create in her students a sense of wonderment and awe; it is her duty to instill in the pupil the desire to be a lifelong learner, because life is itself an education.
