I am a teacher, certified to teach high school social studies. I have a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Smith College, an MPhil (a doctorate without a dissertation) in History from George Washington University and an MAT from Simmons College. I have taught and tutored at both the collegiate and high school levels, in History, Biology, Calculus and Spanish. I am happy to help with any subjects in which you or your child may need or want assistance. I am most comfortable with History, particularly World History (ancient through modern) and US History (I admit that political history between 1820 and 1850 is not my favorite subject, but I know it!). I speak four languages beyond English, in varying degrees (French, German, Arabic, Hebrew). My graduate training in History focused on Middle Eastern History and Cold War History (especially the nuclear arms race); in college, I minored in History, primarily the History of Europe between the Dark Ages and the Renaissance. I believe that a high school teacher's job (and a tutor's) is not just to cover the curriculum. I also provide my students with the skills they will need to succeed in college and the workplace, including study skills, note-taking skills, research skills, writing skills,and critical thinking skills, especially about current events. I agree with Jefferson on the necessity of well-informed voters to a functioning democracy. I also believe that learning should be fun, whenever possible, while admitting that, particularly in high school, students must often "get through" subjects they do not find fun. I feel I should acknowledge that I consider that once my student, always my student. This means that I answer panicked emails from students who have forgotten how to do footnotes once they get to college, among other things. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy reading, watching rugby (I used to play), swimming, dancing (all kinds), photography, reading, manga/anime and needlecrafts. Model United Nations is my all-time favorite club. In addition, I love spending time with my nephew and nieces (preschool to early elementary age). I love to laugh and I am often unintentionally funny; fortunately, I don't mind laughing at myself on occasion.

I am a graduate of Washington University in St Louis, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in History with minors in Humanities and Anthropology. Since graduation, I have worked as a tutor, teacher, and director of tutors at a charter public middle school in Boston. During this time I also received my Masters in Mild to Moderate Disabilities from Simmons College. I have worked extensively with students with a range of abilities, including students with specific learning disabilities, emotional impairments, dyslexia, and ADHD. My teaching experience has given me a deep understanding of the knowledge and habits essential to academic success and has given me the opportunity to hone a variety of strategies that ensure students at each level can achieve their academic goals. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, my favorite ones are Reading, Elementary/Middle School Math, History, and Test Prep. In my experience, tutoring is the most rewarding when a student has that "aha!" moment and achieves a new level of understanding and confidence in his/her abilities. I am a firm believer in the transformative power of education, and I see my role to be that of a facilitator and coach who is there to help the student reach his/her goals through individualized support and rigorous practice. In my free time, I enjoy reading, running, practicing my Spanish, and discovering new music. I am also an avid traveler and just got back from a 3 month trip to South America. I am a senior at Simmons College. I will be graduating in May 2015 and receiving my Bachelor of Arts and Science in Biostatistics and Biochemistry. I look forward to getting a Masters Degree in Biostatistics. From 7th grade to 9th grade, I have been working with elementary students on subjects such as Math, English, and Writing, including electives. In high school, I have tutored high school students in math subjects such as Algebra, Calculus, Physics, Latin, and Chinese. In College, I have tutored college students in Calculus I & II, Multivariable Calculus, Statistics, Biochemistry, Algebra, Physics, Microbiology, Chinese, and more. Although I tutor a wide range of subjects, I am most passionate about Calculus, Statistics, and Chinese. Based on my learning and tutoring experience, I believe it is critical to learn and understand all of the concepts of the subject, practice and master the knowledge, and then apply it to real world situations. Organization in the teaching and learning of the subject plays an important role. I hope that students result in mastering and appreciating the subject. On my own time, I enjoy working out at the gym, playing the Chinese hammered dulcimer and a wide variety of Chinese drum sets, travelling to new places, and trying new food.

I am an instruction librarian at a university in Boston and a former classroom teacher. I hold a degree in education and a degree in English language and literature, as well as a teaching license from the state of Massachusetts.My experience in and out of the classroom, as well as my study of educational theory and practice, informs my teaching. I am a graduate of Simmons College in Boston, where I received my degree in Biology as well as my Master's degree in Secondary Education. Biology has always been fascinating and a passion for me, but during my graduate studies I worked as a student teacher for a full year at a public high school, where I realized that my true passion is sharing my knowledge and sparking an interest in science for my students!I have taught biology at the high school level for three years, and have tutored students at various levels and branches of biology as well. I also teach biology for a program in Boston called Classroom At The Workplace where I work with many English language learners. I graduated from Brown University with a Bachelor of Arts in English with a focus in Renaissance Literature. After graduation, I received a Fulbright teaching grant to work as an English teacher in a bilingual high school in northern Spain. I liked the work and living in Spain so much that I decided to stay for another year, this time teaching at a different high school in Valladolid (near Madrid). My other teaching experience includes working as an SAT Critical Reading Instructor and tutoring high school students and adults in English while I lived in Spain. I also taught writing workshops for developmentally disabled adults while I was in college. Currently, I am enrolled in the Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science, and upon completing my Master's degree, I hope to work in a special collections library with rare books and manuscripts.I tutor a number of subjects and am especially excited about English, Writing, SAT Critical Reading and Spanish. I always make sure to customize my lessons to the personalities and learning styles of my students and try to incorporate a variety of resources and exercises whenever possible. I think that one-on-one tutoring is an interactive process that should include lots of back-and-forth communication. Learning new concepts, especially ones that are initially challenging, is an exciting and enriching experience for me, and I hope to share that excitement with my students.In my free time, I love to read, especially science fiction, fantasy, and big, shaggy 19th century novels. I also enjoy hiking, camping and backpacking. Being new to the Boston area, I am looking forward to learning more about the area, especially all things book, library and history related.

I am currently a branch librarian just outside of Minneapolis/St. Paul. I received my Masters in Library and Information Science, with a youth services focus, from Simmons College in Boston, MA. I earned my Bachelor of Arts, a dual degree in Writing Intensive English and Journalism, with a Minor in History, from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Since completing my education I’ve worked in a wide variety of academic settings from an inner city middle school in Cambridge, MA to an elite private preschool-12th grade school in Baton Rouge, LA, to a charter school focused on Hmong culture and heritage in St. Paul. My role in the Charter School in St. Paul was that of reading tutor with Minnesota Reading Corps, because of this and my literature background, I am most comfortable with reading and writing instruction. I also worked on reading and writing while volunteering at 826 Boston. In addition to reading and writing instruction for students of all ages, I have experience tutoring and teaching all subjects studied in early elementary school. I gained this experience from tutoring students at 826 Boston and subbing consistently at the school in Louisiana. I believe that tutoring sessions should be educational and skills increased, but it should also be fun, and if a student’s confidence in a subject area increases, then I feel I am succeeding. Once confident in their ability to achieve their goals, I find students are more likely to put forth the effort and eventually achieve their goal. In addition to teaching and tutoring, I like running, yoga, reading, scrapbooking, and generally staying fit in mind and body.

I am a native Spanish speaker who enjoys sharing my language and culture with others who are interested and motivated to learn it.I hold a K-12 professional teaching certificate with 20+ years of teaching experience with all the High School Spanish levels including AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature.

I have always been passionate about helping others, whether through volunteering, working as an EMT, or coaching youth lacrosse. Tutoring, however, is one of my favorite outlets to help others because it is a journey that involves my students and I to work together to achieve their learning goals. I started tutoring in undergrad at Wheaton College in Massachusetts, where I graduated with a B.A. in Biochemistry. At Wheaton, I developed the philosophy that learning should be fun. In my tutoring sessions I like to take time to get to know the student before we jump into the material. Even as we work through the session, it is not uncommon to joke around and laugh. Currently I am tutoring Biology and Life Sciences which are my favorite subjects because they can be observed in everyday life! After receiving my MBA in Healthcare, I have had more time to spend on hobbies. In my newly acquired spare time, I enjoy being active outdoors, reading fiction, playing sports, and training for a triathlon.
