Upon graduating, I became a tutor at the university's Center for Academic Achievement. Following that, I earned a certificate to Teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from the Boston Language Institute. I then transitioned to EF International, an internationally renowned language academy. Using this experience, I moved to South Korea to teach English as language for over two years. After graduating in 2007 from Clark University with a business degree, I went straight into account management, and remained in various similar positions for seven years. Knowing that these jobs were not what my heart truly desired, I looked into pursuing my dream of working with children, and started graduate school at Lesley University in 2014. I completed my degree requirements in December 2015 and will have my Masters in Elementary Education (1-6) degree conferred in February 2016. I have my SEI endorsement and initial licenses in elementary education and mathematics (1-6).Since September of 2014 I have been working as a kindergarten paraprofessional at the Carlton Innovation School in Salem, MA. I also provide substitute coverage when needed in classrooms throughout the school. My experiences as a para range from assisting the kindergarten teacher with classroom management to leading full class instruction if she is unavailable. I have also taken a role as an in home tutor for a student at the Carlton who has a medical condition which requires him to be hospitalized for three days each month. I have worked with him weekly since he was in the third grade, and he is now a fourth grade student. During my student teaching I led full class and small group lessons. I planned and taught a week long Lucy Calkins literacy unit and worked with a guided reading group. I proctored many assessments, including the Fountas and Pinnell benchmark assessment system, MCAS and ANet. I executed a week-long fifth grade mathematics unit and gained knowledge of the EnVision math curriculum. Through these experiences I have built strong personal relationships with my students, parents, and school staff.
I enjoy working with young people in general but especially in academics. Helping with study skills is essential. There are times when a focus on learning styles is as important as the curriculum.
I am currently an adjunct professor at a private college in Boston where I teach English - both Literature and Composition - as well as several courses in the Humanities, including Art History. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I very much enjoy meeting with my students during office hours where I have the opportunity to work individually with anyone seeking extra help. During a typical meeting I spend as much time listening as instructing. My goal is to help a student gain greater understanding of the material but just as importantly to help build confidence through practice and instruction that is customized to meet a particular student's needs. I think the best tutoring session occurs when there is a give-and-take of questions, responses and recommended solutions: maintaining a dialogue is vital. I find it very rewarding when I observe one of my students improve in an area that was originally daunting, whether that involves revising ideas in a paper, mastering material for an upcoming exam, proofreading a final draft, or gaining the confidence to join in the next class discussion. My favorite areas are Writing, (anything from the fundamentals to research essays) Literature, Art History and Drama. In my spare time I enjoy reading short stories and novels, watching plays - live performances whenever possible - and rooting for the Red Sox!
I have my BA in History from Salve Regina University, and my Master's in Education from Lesley University. I have been teaching and tutoring for the past four years in the greater Boston area. I am a certified teacher for history grades 8-12 and have teaching experience in both middle schools and high schools. I have tutored all ages and love working with many subjects such as History, ELA, Writing and developing Math skills with younger students! I have worked with many students on IEPs and love to help them strengthen their organization and focus. I believe that my teaching style adapts to ensure that each student can reach their full potential. By understanding where students have weaknesses, we can improve in these areas so that their grades improve and that they feel more confident. Outside of tutoring, I love to spend time with my family, friends and my dog.
In 2015, I graduated from Lesley University with a B.A. in Literature and a minor in Education. I received my M.A. in English and Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University in 2019. I am a literacy interventionist for grades three to five but have worked with children of all ages. I also provide detailed feedback on college essays focusing on higher and lower order concerns. I enjoy helping students overcome any obstacles they may face in reading and writing and ultimately foster a love for both. Building students' confidence in literacy helps them reach their academic goals and is vital to living successful lives. With over ten years of experience in special education, I can address various learning challenges and will tailor my instruction to the individual.
