I am currently a Neurology Resident at Kansas University Medical Center. I am ready to tutor a number of subjects, but I would like to help students with MCAT or GRE test preparation. I favor the Sciences but I would be happy to tutor in any subject. I was a TA in college and taught other learners in medical school and residency. In my free time I like to ride, exercise, play with my dogs and explore Kansas City.

I am a professor at UWM, teaching graduate level courses in Translation and Interpreting Studies. I have also taught high school students in Spanish at Concordia Language Villages, and taught undergraduate students Spanish as a TA from 2003 to 2010.I want to tutor because I love face to face instruction. My current position has me teaching exclusively online, but my true passion is interacting with students personally. I like the ongoing, one on one nature of tutoring because it allows for the development of a relationship that fosters trust, respect and commitment.I am a volunteer for Ex Fabula, which features live storytelling on stage; I've even won audience favorite as a teller myself! I love to walk on the Oak Leaf Trail, play board games with friends, read novels, play volleyball and translate literature. I work well with students who have ADHD, and am warm and engaging with children of all ages. For students who are preparing for college or for graduate school, I can provide the inside scoop on what your professors are looking for--because I am one! I spend a good part of my time revising and evaluating student writing, and can provide valuable feedback for students from high school through graduate school.
I am a graduate of a small private college called Central College in Pella, Iowa. I have a bachelors degree in Biochemistry and Biology. At central, I worked as a tutor for three years in subjects: Biology, Biochemistry, general chemistry, inorganic and organic chemistry. I have a passion for science and I love working on difficult problems, especially when it comes to helping someone understand the material better. During my experience as a tutor, I have developed skills that help students understand and memorize material better. This is done through drawing problems out, and going through it step by step until the student knows it well enough to explain it. I have also gained the ability to "dumb-down" information to make it much easier to understand. Also,I enjoy using real life scenarios and stories to help the student understand concepts better. I enjoy making the studying/tutoring fun and enjoyable because i know how frustrating it can be as a student. Outside of tutoring or working, i love sports, especially soccer, and enjoy reading books. I love spending time with animals and l reading scripture. Daily I am on the move, due to my tremendous amount of energy, and i use this as a tool to impact people's lives on a positive note.
While receiving my double-major in Spanish and Political Science at Central College I lived abroad in Spain and Mexico - increasing my fluency of Spanish and deepening my knowledge of the two Spanish-speaking cultures. After graduating, I lived as a resident ESL and Life Skills teacher for refugee families just entering the United States and also traveled extensively throughout Latin America as a student of life and language. My life partner is from Mexico, so he and I get to play with two languages everyday as well! My current work as a homeless shelter host in Portland, Oregon also allows me to engage clients in Spanish every time I work. I consider myself lucky to be able to use and develop my languages at work and in the home, as the refining process of learning a language is my favorite part of being bilingual!Whether it is English or Spanish I am speaking, sharing my passion for language is an innate character of mine that propels my teaching philosophy. Learning a new language or refining one already known can open up an entire new world to a student. It not only makes one more qualified and desirable to employers, but also enables one to include oneself in the innerworkings of an entire cultural context! Traveling or living in a foreign country that speaks one's second language becomes an enriching and eye opening experience instead of being left in the dark. I love invigorating tutoring sessions with applicable life skills that engage not only the language being learned, but also the associated culture. My experience in teaching Spanish and ESL ranges from 5 year old refugee children that can neither read nor write, to young immigrant mothers with a slight grasp of English, to fluent English speakers who want to hone their Spanish speaking skills. When I am not attempting to conjugate verbs in the subjunctive tense in Spanish, one can find me running on trails, doing yoga, creating a crowd funding website for trail runners, reading about Eastern and philosophy, tending a vegetable and herb garden, riding my 1980s bike, drinking too much coffee, cooking a new recipe, and spending time with loved ones. In all I do, I aspire to inspire, create, and give gratitude. I like to live by the words of a favorite poet, Rumi, ''With Life as short as a half-taken Breath, don't plant anything but Love.''
I am a professional educator with a passion for working with students. I believe that each student can learn, it just takes patience and hard work. For me working with a student is really a partnership between the parents, student and tutor. We all need to work together in an open and honest relationship. Communication is key. In order for me to know how to best work with students, I need to better understand their study habits and the environment in which the studying takes place. With this information, I am better able to make concrete suggestions on how the student may improve. Working with a tutor is just that - working with the student; the tutor is not a crutch. My job is to explain and clarify in a more effective manner the issues which are troubling the student. I am dedicated to assist in the learning process and to challenge the student to grow into a more confident learner and thinker. World Languages are my passion. I have been very fortunate to have lived, worked and studied abroad in Paris, Geneva and Mexico City. My work experience in schools is varied from classroom teacher to Assistant Head of School/Principal. I have also worked in admissions marketing, college counseling. I understand and appreciate the value of an excellent education. While tutoring, I dedicate myself to the student and their success. I look forward to working with you as partners as we help your student become an independent and hardworking student and a critical thinker qualities that are and will be needed for all students today and in the future.
