After graduation, I relocated to begin my teaching career and attended night school where I received my Cosmetologist License at Tennessee Tech. I taught 4th grade ELA for 5 years before becoming the literacy coach. As the instructional facilitator for 15 years, I worked with students and teachers to strengthen and enhance their reading and writing skills. Through modeling, guided practice, data analysis, and PLC, our school showed magnificent growth and gained proficiency in math and literacy. After receiving my Master's Degree in Educational Leadership and also Curriculum and Instruction, I relocated to another an elementary school in the district where I continued as a literacy coach and gain another task as a dylexia screener and tutor until accepting another position in another district for my current position. Our current enrollment is approximately 800 K-6 students, and we are continuously working to improve student academic performance.

Have you ever had a dream come true? Well, I have. Working with children to learn has always been a dream of mine. When I was a young girl I would cherish the times when I was the teacher (play) and my friends and relatives were students. I would spend hours playing and pretending that I was the instructor. Now that I have experienced being the teacher for 18 years, I just can't get enough of working with children. This is why I am now a tutor. I received my Elementary Certification from The University of Missouri, in 1979. I later returned to school and received my Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Arkansas in 2011.I tutor Math (grades 1-3), Phonics, and Reading (grades 1-5). My favorite subject to tutor is beginning level reading which includes phonics. The reason I enjoy teaching beginning level reading is because I believe that mastering phonics gives children a foundation in which to build on in order to become fluent readers. My interest was piqued in a first grade science course. It was the only subject where asking questions was encouraged, and not challenged. In high school my curiosity deepened and led me to pursue a degree in Biology education.After graduating from Florida Atlantic University with my Bachelor of Science in Biology education, I became a middle school science teacher. Instead of teaching towards the State exam, I focused on teaching towards the standards. This enabled my students to see the relevance in their learning, through collaboration, creation and problem based learning with solar cars/solar ovens. Curiosity and the intrigue of learning prompted me to go down the "rabbit-hole" of STEM at the end of the tunnel, Robotics and a CS certification. The focus was on VEX,physical computing with Microbit, Arduino, sensors, JIMU and Piper computers, (Raspberry Pi).Students dived in with Scratch from MIT, creating their own stories and interactive games .tThey learned that computer science encapsulates so many industries from manufacturing to medical. The exploration of these content areas empowered them to become agents of change in society. The 8.5 year experiences gained in middle school catapulted me to High school as the Magnet and Vocational coordinator. Content connections are cultivated when collaboration and career application is mandated. These lines of discovery are interwoven into the fabric of the courses, because students need to see themselves as engineers, scientists , entrepreneurs and professionals today, to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

I received a double major in Mathematics and Mathematics Education from Arkansas State University. I currently teach Math 1 , but have had experience in Math 2 , Math 3 and Pre Calculus . I have also substituted in various classes including Geometry , Algebra 2 , Statistics and Calculus. I am a certified high school math teacher. I have a total of 7 years of teaching high school math and tutoring college math. I understand how struggling math students think. I was a mediocre math student in high school and math was not really my thing. However, in college I had a wonderful math tutor who worked diligently with me so that I really grasped college Algebra and I ended up acing the subject which had always alluded me in high school. It was amazing how much more enjoyable math was once I understood it and looked forward to using it. Instead of an annoying road block, it became an intriguing Class. Education can be given in such a way that virtually everyone can grasp and excel in school, including advanced concepts in mathematics. A weakness of our education system is that often students, whose learning style does not fit the education mold, are forced to fit as a square peg through a round hole. This rigidness and lack of flexibility often creates learners who have apathy or resentment towards math that is unnecessary. In my own practice of teaching and tutoring I have found that often students who were judged to not be able to do complex math could do it with the right tools and guidance. Students who were decent students were also able to perform at a better level as well with improved guidance. The biggest problem in student's understanding they often struggle or are weak in the foundational skills of math for that subject or the math subjects leading up to the current class, and are therefore trying to learn a new concept while simultaneously trying relearn old concepts that were not understood in the first place. Math, more than any other subject, builds on itself. Students have to have a solid foundation or go back and reinforce weak areas in order to master further concepts. Mastery learning in math is paramount. We have to crawl before we walk and walk before we run.

I have my bachelor of science degree in Animal Science with an emphasis in Pre-Veterinary Medicine at Arkansas State University.
