I have experience teaching beginning readers strategies to help them in their reading journey, utilizing decoding skills, phonemic awareness and direct instruction in phonics to guide developing readers and helping them to get stronger in their reading skills. I have experience helping older readers develop skills needed for comprehension such as teaching how to synthesize and analyze text. I obtained my dyslexia certificate by the state of Ohio in May of 2023 indicating I participated in trainings and completed a dyslexia course.

My favorite subjects are reading, writing and math. I like reading and writing because those subjects go hand and hand. In order to read, you need to decode (sound out) words. In order to write the words, you need to encode (to spell) words. When students learn to decode it supports his/her encoding. These are two different skills to teach. Math is another one because there is always more than one way to solve a problem. My mission is to make sure you reach your goal and equip you with tools to be self efficient. I love to enrich minds and help students who are looking for additional support to better their education. When the student(s) and I are working on a problem, I will see different methods to solve a problem or what conceptions him/her may have and that needs to be corrected. Students and I take the beginning of the session to get to know each other and then I assess his/her weaknesses and strengths in the subject matters. I assess varies skills and strategies in each subject. I give 10-15 minutes for a break to have student use the bathroom, stretch or get a mental relief. I give students time to apply skills/strategies that were taught. I am determined to make sure information is convey to my clients. I advocate and work for my students. I am a life science teacher at Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I have been teaching for 25 years (2 in the Chicagoland area and 23 in my native state) and have enjoyed it immensely. I enjoy fitness activities, DIY projects and spending time with my family and our three dogs. I am a mother of three college aged children and have found myself with some available time on my hands and am looking for a rewarding challenge. I am a graduate of Eastern Illinois University. I received my bachelor of Science in Education with a focus in Early Childhood Special Education (meaning I am certified to teach ages 0-21). Since graduating in 2019, I have worked at elementary and high schools. While I tutor all subjects I am most passionate about Math and English.
