Reading the material and conceptually understanding is just the first step in being able to apply theory. I have found that there is no good substitute to working through problems and to learn by doing them. Even if you don't get the correct answer the first time, reworking them will deepen that groove of understanding. Then each time the topic comes up a more intuitive understanding can be obtained. In my time away from books I enjoy staying physically active, from boxing classes to weight lifting. It helps to relive stress and clear the mind to take on life's difficult problems with boldness.
