Reading, writing, and teaching is my passion. I am currently employed as a substitute teacher for grades K-12 and a Varsity tutor. Prior to earning my bachelors degree, I completed an Associate of Arts degree in General Studies in 2011, with a pathway to elementary education from Coastal Carolina Community College. Upon completion, I transferred to the University of North Carolina-Wilmington where I completed additional education courses and field teaching experiences. ***Skills I learned included the following:1. How to run records to assess reading and comprehension levels2. How to analyze writing samples3. How to write lesson plans4. Fostering critical thinking5. Selecting appropriate, engaging, current learning resources and activities.6. How to teach ELA skills to grade level standards and improve reading comprehension.7. How to keep track of progress.8. Motivating and managing classrooms using positive reinforcement. In 2012, my spouse received military orders to Okinawa, Japan. While in Japan, I worked for a primary school as a paraprofessional. I assisted teachers and tutored groups of students to help strengthen reading and writing skills. Living in Japan was a rewarding experience, because I had the opportunity to expand my knowledge of working with students and teachers from diverse cultures. After the tour was over, my family and I moved back to the United States. From 2017-2019, I was employed as a substitute teacher for grades K-12. I taught and reinforced skills in English Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science. In addition, I tutored students with Individualized Educational Plans (IEP) who were at risk academically. I spent the last year primarily as a middle school sub. Since becoming a Varsity tutor, I have also assessed students for gaps in phonemic awareness. As a Varsity tutor, I am passionate about researching the most current and relevant teaching methods for each student. I aim to help students reach their goals and enjoy their experience! :)

I enjoy listening to podcasts, reading, journaling, playing my flute, streaming movies, and spending time with my family and our Yorkie dog, Daisy.
