I found that I loved having the freedom to take classes that I was really interested in, and so also minored in French, Anthropology and Economics. Upon graduating, I worked for a year abroad in Senegal, helping volunteers get acquainted with Senegalese life and culture. Here, I was able to practice my French, and spend time in a country I had come to love. When I returned to New York, I was accepted into the NYC Teaching Fellows program, and began teaching in a high school in the Bronx as I earned my Masters in Secondary Special Education in the evenings. At this high school, I taught Algebra and French! I really enjoyed teaching both subjects, especially because students seem to be particularly nervous about math and foreign language. I was always up for the challenge of helping them realize that these content areas can be fun and accessible. I have also pursued an Advanced Certificate in TESOL and have supported the ELLs in my school by pushing into content classes, as well as helping my colleagues modify materials so that they would be more accessible to their ELL students. As someone who learned French later in my life, I can relate to what it's like to be a language learner. It can be really hard and frustrating at times, but I know first-hand that it is definitely possible! When I am not teaching, I enjoy relaxing by listening to music, watching movies, and reading. When I have time off, I love traveling and have visited a number of countries in Europe and Africa. I know that my patient, positive and friendly personality, as well as my diverse experience as a teacher, will ensure that we meet your learning goals! I look forward to meeting you! :)
