I believe that to be a great teacher, you must be willing to be a great learner. All the great teachers that I have met were flexible, kind, and learners themselves. I try to bring these qualities to every class I teach. As a teacher for almost 13 years, I also believe it is important to adapt and change what you teach based off of your student's strengths and learning styles. I volunteered as a youth mentor in high school as well as during my undergraduate years; during that time, I gained great enjoyment watching my mentees grow as learners and individuals. I strongly believe that each student can achieve success through hard work and the proper guidance. Through careful and patient observation, I can identify the skills and deficiencies that each student possesses, and subsequently guide the student toward improved understanding and academic success.

I am a graduate of Wellesley College, where I earned my degree in Classical Civilization and English Literature. After graduation, I entered the merchant training program with a high-end department store, and I spent eight years with them working in both merchant and store management roles. After my time in luxury retailing, I returned to school to earn my MBA at The Ohio State University, with a major in Organizational Behavior and a minor in Finance. My business experience combined with my return to education inspired me to pursue a PhD in business. I am currently entering my second year of the doctoral program in Organizational Behavior at Washington University in St. Louis, Olin School of Business. I have acted as a tutor and a mentor throughout my education and my business career, with students of all ages and backgrounds. My teaching philosophy is that I am a coach whose role is to understand how the student thinks so that I can ask the right questions that will challenge them to learn and internalize new or difficult concepts. I firmly believe that a great tutoring relationship is built upon trust, respect for each other, engaging in two-way dialogue, and a good dose of humor! I enjoy tutoring a variety of subjects-from the technicalities of math to the challenge of idea generation in writing. I also have an interest helping students improve test taking techniques and study methods. I love to travel and to meet new people, I am a regular practitioner of yoga, and I have a sweet little dog named Einstein.

Being a technology teacher I don't always get to practice some of those other wonderful content areas we have to work on in college, such as English and History. Tutoring give me an opportunity to get back in touch with subjects. I have had the opportunity to work one on one with several students as a homebound instructor. In addition I have a reading endorsement. I used to teach illiterate adults how to read and I have seen the devastating effects of not being able to read as an adult. So making sure kids master fundamental reading skills at a young age is very important to me. I love teaching and I am excited about the possibility of being able to work with students and lead them to additional academic successes!

I am currently a Chemistry/Pre-Pharmacy major and I will earn my Bachelors of Science in Chemistry in one year. I have been working with students from all ages: 9-25 years old. I love all sports, whether I'm watching or playing -- especially golf, bowling, football, and basketball. Forest Park is my home away from home.I currently work for a non-profit education organization, Blueprint Schools Network, as a full-time Freshman Algebra tutor at Vashon High School downtown. I was formerly in public accounting for approximately two and a half years before making a career change to teaching in an effort to pursue roles in a field I am more passionate about.In my free time and during the summer, I support a high school buddy in operation of a locally-based non-profit service organization called the Education Exchange Corps, which offers improved educational opportunities for at-risk youth in primary school grade levels.

I am a freelance writer and entrepreneur with over five years of professional sales experience. I have made a living with my communication skills and I want to help struggling English students develop theirs. My goal is to help my students raise their grades/test scores and let them grow into the wordsmiths they were meant to be!My sessions include:-learning about my student and their reason for hiring a tutor-setting goals and a time frame for achieving them-assessing their skills-providing assistance with their assignments, test prep, and skill development-wrapping up our sessions with quick assessments to test their knowledgeI am eager to tutor students in essay writing, college applications, 4th-10th grade English, public speaking, SAT prep, GMAT prep, and reading comprehension.

My personal education consists of a high school degree with classes largly focused in math and science, and I am currently working towards an Aerospace Engineering degree at the University of Colorado, Boulder. In high school, I worked with 5th grade students tutoring math. Beyond that, I was always avaliable to help my classmates learn topics that I may have understood better at the time. Overall, math and science courses are my favorite to help people with because I enjoy those courses myself and think the knowledge is not hard to learn if given the right teacher and enough time. In teaching, I like to understand the level of comprehension the student has first before just going in and telling them what he/she should do. It is more effective to learn how to teach yourself the knowledge than to just be able to regurgitate it onto a test. Other than academics, I like playing basketball, video games, and just hanging out and messing around with friends.
