Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was our first meeting and I got to know the student and her specific goals and issues. She is not a great test taker, so we are going to work on improving that. We began with some basic math to see where she stands. Specifically, we covered geometry and basic algebra. She is fairly weak and does not remember many concepts from high school math. She picked up on concepts like the Pythagorean Theorem fairly quickly though. We will continue with basic math concepts for the next few sessions to get her math foundation up to speed and go into more difficult things from there. I will be giving her practice problems to do for the next week as well."
"Today we reviewed questions 13-22 using the study guide for the test. We reviewed deductive reasoning, surface area and area or a rectangle and cubic solid, the distributive property and volume. The student will review any questions she had difficulty with until we meet next time."
"The student wanted to do some GMAT verbal review prior to his test tomorrow. We reviewed sentence corrections (subject/verb agreement, verb tense, pronoun rules, etc.) and how to use the answer choices to help guide decisions. We reviewed reading comprehension and how to let the question guide the amount of reading to do for a question. We also discussed some methods for eliminating answer choices. For critical reasoning, we reviewed assumption questions, cause/effect, strengthen, weaken, etc. We also discussed the multi-pass answer evaluation system to eliminate the out of scope or irrelevant answer choices on the first pass, and then critically evaluate the remaining answer choices. We ended the session with a brief discussion of scratch paper preparedness prior to starting the test and how the student should utilize his time today."
"We discussed the overall structure of the exam and did practice games. I advised that the student to do both timed and untimed game sections to practice and also go back to understand all of his missed questions. He is just acquainting himself with the exam, so we are going to meet 2x a week for the next three weeks."
"We finished up the second unit of reading comprehension, and have essentially completed the whole book. From this point forward, our sessions will be more about reviewing the student's questions from her practice, and also potentially working through practice sections together, talking about why wrong answer choices are wrong, and why right ones are right."
"We focused on reading and logical reasoning today. The student did well on both sections; her main issue at this point seems to be just reading more closely. We will try to work on slowing down just slightly so that she takes in the information more fully."
