I have been tutoring students in math, reading, and writing since high school, and I've found that teaching and learning happens on both ends. Just as the activity of teaching is not limited to the teacher, the activity of learning is not limited to the student. There is always an exchange between what the teacher and student have to offer.I believe it is best to show, rather than tell students how to work their way through the task at hand, whether it be a problem or a prompt. I know that there is not always one way to solve a problem or answer a prompt, so I am always open and patient with students as we walk through that process.

My name is John Britton Buttrill, and I am an educator working in a global context. I have worked as an English Literature teacher for the past five years and will spend this year traveling throughout France & West Africa. I hold two graduate degrees, an MFA in creative writing and an MA in English education. I believe that the study of English allows us to garner the communication skills, while gaining a larger understanding of how our lives fit in to a diverse world. My passion for teaching literature stems from my background as a writer, as I am a produced playwright, published poet, and freelance journalist.I have worked as an English teacher with the NYC Department of Education. I taught 9th grade English at a Title-1 high-school, serving high-needs BIPOC students, where I took on leadership and teaching roles. I was a team leader for the 9th grade English department, created department wide unit plans for a variety of texts, and taught both honors-level and special-needs students. I was a member of our school's Equity Committee and co-creator of a mentorship group for male-identifying students of color. During the 2020/2021 remote-learning school year, I utilized a variety of technologies, including Google Classroom, PearDeck, and Padlet. Lastly, I had the highest student-attendance rate in our high-school.As a teacher of literature and literacy, I employ a Critical Pedagogy using the Socratic method. My practice is grounded in equity and social justice, and thus I challenge my students to interrogate the world around them. I believe that effective ELA instruction should be tailored to students' cultural contexts, while maintaining rigor and college preparedness. To achieve these goals, I strive for an authentic, relationship-based classroom culture.

I have an MBA, BS in political science and an AA in voice/music. I have a very diverse background in education both as an administrator and as a teacher...I consider myself to be a "Jack of all Trades".I have 8 years experience as a college professor teaching, business, life skills, academic success, ESOL, citizenship (government/US history), vocabulary, customer service and tutoring. I believe in teaching the individual. To me, this means learning who the student is both inside and outside of the learning environment. Everyone learns differently, but people learn more quickly when the information is presented in a manner that is relevant to their lives. Learning a student's interests allows me to customize a specific curriculum to meet their individual needs.I have also tutored and taught, both honors as well as the exceptional student populations, in elementary, middle and high school subject matters. Across the board, the key to a student's success is finding their strengths, building their confidence and connecting inferences between old and new subject matters. I believe these techniques give each student the opportunity to succeed. On a personal note I was born in Pennsylvania, but moved to Florida after graduating high school. I just moved to Washington state a few weeks ago and I am enjoying the mountains and the cooler weather. I can't wait to see snow again! I love to travel, I enjoy outdoor activities, and love my friends!

"Education Is Not the Filling of a Pail, But the Lighting of a Fire" - W.B. YeatsThis philosophy has always guided my approach to teaching. I believe that getting a student from A to B is certainly critical, but what is even more essential is the 'aha' moment when a difficult problem clicks, a love for writing comes about, a passion is ignited, and/or inspiration is born. This is what makes a student a lifelong learner who doesn't shy away from a challenge or the unknown. I like to inject fun and humor into learning and am the product of some really excellent educators who I like to think inform my teaching style. My tutoring experience began nearly four years ago when I began working with an organization that helps prepare under-served students for the SAT and the college admissions process. I enjoyed breaking students' preconceived notions about what they could and could not do, and I value the interpersonal relationships with my students that I was able to create and maintain to this day.I graduated with my undergrad in 2012 with degrees in International Relations and Spanish, and I was awarded Distinguished Honors in International Relations. I also minored in Latin American Studies and studied abroad for a semester in Madrid.

Hi everyone. I am a masters-educated teacher who has worked in three different countries, namely Japan, Vietnam and, most recently, Spain for the past seven years and am happy to be here again in my hometown of San Diego! My previous jobs included teaching English and organizing film-related activities at an American community college in Vietnam; assisting local English and History/Science teachers in Spain; and a time on the prestigious Japan Exchange and Teaching Program.I have also served as a Japanese-English, English-Japanese translator for various projects as I have studied the language for over four years at San Diego State, as well as lived five years in Japan. I have kept my skills mostly by keeping in touch with my friends abroad as well as reading Japanese books I have lugged around between countries. I hold a Japanese Language Proficiency Test qualification of N2 which is the second-highest level, so, while I am not a native, beginners and intermediate students can rest assured that I can help them with those pesky kanji compounds and keigo while also learning how to speak more naturally. As for my Spanish, I am proud to report that I finished my masters at the University of Alcala de Henares in Spain and, like much of San Diego these days, have spoken Spanish since birth. My primary focus is Latino Spanish but I am also comfortable with the Castilian variety since that I see is just as prominent in schools.In-between these jobs, I have also worked as a photographer and filmmaker with my work being published in the "2:46 #Quakebook" charity book, Otaku USA magazine (yes, I am something of a nerd) and, of all things, the billboard of a Tokyo hot dog shop. I have a BA in Television, Film and New Media Production from San Diego State, so I am also more than happy to extend my knowledge of effective camera techniques, shot composition, and post-production on both still and motion pictures.I am a strong believer in helping students grow to become autonomous in their studies. It doesn't happen overnight but when it does happen, it will acknowledged and built further upon. I believe in making sessions dynamic and adapt to student's needs as I see them and as told to me. I don't get offended by students comments or suggestions because, after all, teaching is a reciprocal and parallel process.I look forward to being able to meet and help you in your needs!Cheers,Fernando

I am a graduate of Wheaton College where I earned a B.A. in History, Social Sciences and Education. Grateful to have grown up in St. Louis, I returned in 2008 to give back to the community as an educator. I spent two years as a classroom teacher and tutor of 6th grade students before being hired for upper school History at Westminster Christian Academy. My teaching responsibilities have included Ancient History, Western Civilization, and 20th Century World History. I have just started my sixth year as a certified educator, and I am reflecting on the changes that have taken place in my profession in recent years. With larger class sizes and an increasingly diverse student body in St. Louis area schools, individual instruction is at a premium. This is what makes tutoring such a valuable service to families. Tutoring honors and promotes the individuality that is essential to authentic learning. Though I specialize in upper school humanities, I understand the universal goals of education and have experience teaching at all levels. I look forward to helping students in a variety of contexts as they navigate the challenges before them.
