Just as the activity of teaching is not limited to the teacher, the activity of learning is not limited to the student. I hold two graduate degrees, an MFA in creative writing and an MA in English education. I was a team leader for the 9th grade English department, created department wide unit plans for a variety of texts, and taught both honors-level and special-needs students. I was a member of our school's Equity Committee and co-creator of a mentorship group for male-identifying students of color. During the 2020/2021 remote-learning school year, I utilized a variety of technologies, including Google Classroom, PearDeck, and Padlet. Lastly, I had the highest student-attendance rate in our high-school.As a teacher of literature and literacy, I employ a Critical Pedagogy using the Socratic method. My practice is grounded in equity and social justice, and thus I challenge my students to interrogate the world around them. I believe that effective ELA instruction should be tailored to students' cultural contexts, while maintaining rigor and college preparedness. To achieve these goals, I strive for an authentic, relationship-based classroom culture.

I have a very diverse background in education both as an administrator and as a teacher...I consider myself to be a "Jack of all Trades".I have 8 years experience as a college professor teaching, business, life skills, academic success, ESOL, citizenship (government/US history), vocabulary, customer service and tutoring. I believe in teaching the individual. To me, this means learning who the student is both inside and outside of the learning environment. Everyone learns differently, but people learn more quickly when the information is presented in a manner that is relevant to their lives. Learning a student's interests allows me to customize a specific curriculum to meet their individual needs.I have also tutored and taught, both honors as well as the exceptional student populations, in elementary, middle and high school subject matters. My previous jobs included teaching English and organizing film-related activities at an American community college in Vietnam; assisting local English and History/Science teachers in Spain; and a time on the prestigious Japan Exchange and Teaching Program.I have also served as a Japanese-English, English-Japanese translator for various projects as I have studied the language for over four years at San Diego State, as well as lived five years in Japan. I have kept my skills mostly by keeping in touch with my friends abroad as well as reading Japanese books I have lugged around between countries. I hold a Japanese Language Proficiency Test qualification of N2 which is the second-highest level, so, while I am not a native, beginners and intermediate students can rest assured that I can help them with those pesky kanji compounds and keigo while also learning how to speak more naturally.As for my Spanish, I am proud to report that I finished my masters at the University of Alcala de Henares in Spain and, like much of San Diego these days, have spoken Spanish since birth. My primary focus is Latino Spanish but I am also comfortable with the Castilian variety since that I see is just as prominent in schools.In-between these jobs, I have also worked as a photographer and filmmaker with my work being published in the "2:46 #Quakebook" charity book, Otaku USA magazine (yes, I am something of a nerd) and, of all things, the billboard of a Tokyo hot dog shop. I have a BA in Television, Film and New Media Production from San Diego State, so I am also more than happy to extend my knowledge of effective camera techniques, shot composition, and post-production on both still and motion pictures.I am a strong believer in helping students grow to become autonomous in their studies. It doesn't happen overnight but when it does happen, it will acknowledged and built further upon. I believe in making sessions dynamic and adapt to student's needs as I see them and as told to me. I have two children, one who is completing a program to become a Physician Assistant, and the other who is a college Sophomore studying to become a middle school science teacher. I spend my spare time reading and enjoying the company of family.

Grateful to have grown up in St. Louis, I returned in 2008 to give back to the community as an educator. My teaching responsibilities have included Ancient History, Western Civilization, and 20th Century World History. I have just started my sixth year as a certified educator, and I am reflecting on the changes that have taken place in my profession in recent years. With larger class sizes and an increasingly diverse student body in St. Louis area schools, individual instruction is at a premium. This is what makes tutoring such a valuable service to families.
