Session Summaries by GMAT Tutors

GMAT Tutoring review by Phoebe in Salt Lake City, UT
The student completed his homework. Today, we covered solid and coordinate geometry and did some practice questions. With some additional practice applying concepts, the student should be well prepared for the test. We briefly reviewed sentence corrections - using a 2/3 split, identifying grammar errors, and comparing answer choices. The student will be assigned some computer adaptive content focused quizzes.

GMAT Tutoring review by Gerard in Salt Lake City, UT
In our first session, the student and I went over a general introduction to the GRE, the types of questions he can expect and the structure of the exam. We went through what kind of questions he can expect to see in the quantitative, verbal and writing sections. We did a few example math problems but spent most of our time practicing some of the verbal material. We went through some practice reading comprehension passages, as well as a handful of fill in the blank problems. HE wants to focus on building his vocabulary but would also like reviewing the other portions of the exam. I recommended a book for him to purchase for our next session, and we will start working out of that next time.

GMAT Tutoring review by Alicia in Salt Lake City, UT
Tonight, both students and I discussed the argument essay that will appear on the GRE. Both students completed a sample argument essay in advance of our meeting, and we started by looking at the scoring guidelines used to assign scores to essays on the GRE. After going through and discussing the different requirements that are expected for each numerical score (1-6), we looked at a group of actual sample essays. There were 6 sample essays total (one for each numerical score), as well as commentary provided by the grader as to why they received the score that they did. We discussed the differences between the different essays, and why they received the score that they did, and this seemed to help them both get a firmer grasp over what was expected, and what type of order/ organization is expected. We then looked over both of the essays that they had written in advance, and discussed what they would now change and keep the same, after seeing the released samples. We ended the session by looking at a group of prompts and outlining basic strategies for what should be discussed, and how a subsequent essay would be organized.

GMAT Tutoring review by Mitchell in Salt Lake City, UT
The student and I reviewed the Algebra practice test section that I asked him to complete since our last meeting. He did very well and seems to have knocked the rust off of his algebra skills. He had a few questions on some of the more conceptual problems in the practice set, so we re-read the problems and worked through them together. We then moved onto the Geometry review section and consequently the Geometry practice exam problem set. His improved algebra skills showed in his ability to set up algebraic expressions to solve geometry based problems. I reiterated to him that there will be many problems like this in the GRE and that it is important to be able to approach a problem with multiple unknowns by setting up a system of algebraic expressions. We worked on several problems with systems of equations and how to work through them step by step. Our next session will be our last and we will discuss data analysis and statistics as well as do a few more practice exam reviews.

GMAT Tutoring review by Erica in Salt Lake City, UT
We went over a math diagnostic test and discussed the concepts and strategies involved in each problem, covering factoring, percentages, averages, and probability in the most detail. We then covered special triangles and multiple geometric figures. Afterwards, we covered strategies for text completion questions. She had a positive attitude towards the material reviewed and felt that talking through the questions she missed helped her understand them better. I included strategies for the types of problems we went over, particularly plugging in multiple numbers for certain quantitative comparison questions. I also included strategies for studying vocabulary and narrowing down answer choices in text completion questions. I left her with extra triangles, geometry, and text completion practice.
