Session Summaries by GMAT Tutors

GMAT Tutoring review by Mahlena-Rae in Chino, CA
My fourth GRE tutoring session with the student went well. She completed the Analysis of an Argument Essay in Practice Test GRE guide book along with the Algebra section of the Math Review. We started by working through the remaining Verbal Reasoning questions in the Practice Test. Then we focused on Text Completion questions. The student found that coming up with her own answers to the questions helped her find the best answer choice, when she remembered to refer to the answer that she had written down. She is also doing well at finding the best answer in the Reading Comprehension questions when she refers back to the passage. For our next tutoring session, the student will complete the second practice in the GRE guide along with the Geometry section of the Math Review. She will also continue to practice her vocabulary by reviewing the sentences she has created from her GRE guide list with her parents.

GMAT Tutoring review by Jeffrey in Chino, CA
We covered basic strategies for reading comp and finding direct evidence from the reading passage to support the answer choice. I had the student run through one passage his own way, then went through a second passage using a different strategy. We discussed writing down the key points of each paragraph and using that to help support answers. The student was struggling most with quickly identifying supporting evidence. The student was very receptive to the new strategies employed. The assigned homework involves writing down the key points of each paragraph and answering the questions. We will review what he wrote down for the key points next time.

GMAT Tutoring review by Karann in Chino, CA
First we went over a couple questions in the GRE practice test that the student had trouble understanding after looking over; these were vocabulary based questions. Then we went through his essays from the GRE practice. I mentioned the need to quickly get to your arguments, use proper sentence structure, and to be concise; don't waste time and space restating the same ideas when you're supporting your argument. Then I reiterated the 5-25 rule for GRE essays (5 minutes planning, 25 minutes writing) and that you should always have at least three key points (so three body paragraphs) in your essay, supported by examples. We spent the rest of the time doing Verbal practice questions, and he did very well in reading comprehension, less so in text completion (mostly due to vocabulary).

GMAT Tutoring review by Heather in Chino, CA
Today, the student and I focused on PAT, looking at questions from the DAT prep book. We spent the majority of the time working on timed TFE questions and then moved on to timed Pattern Folding. After she finished each question, we went over why each answer choice was either correct or wrong and looked at strategies to eliminate quickly. After PAT, we moved on to a few biology questions that she had questions about. We covered topics in cell types (fibroblasts, osteocytes), genetics, membrane proteins, and some key points relating to biotech.
