Autumn
Certified Tutor
I graduated from Mercy College with a Masters Degree in English Language and Literature (emphasis on multi-cultural studies), and I am a full-time English Language Arts and Reading Teacher. For over seven years, I have been teaching some aspect of ELA, capturing experience that extends across multiple curriculum areas to include, but not limited to every area of history, science, social studies, current events, and test preparation. Additionally, I have the gift of being equally capable of tutoring many mathematical areas as evidenced by test scores equated to nearly perfect score in mathematics. My tutoring areas extend across most subjects as I have experience from working with third grade, middle school, high school, and college students. My favorite thing to teach is critical reading and thinking skills because that skill set extends across all curriculum areas. Once students begin analyzing what they read and synthesize it with other areas or prior knowledge, they can see any text, informational or fictional, through a different lens than others. Literature and its applications, no matter they type, begins to make more sense and take root inside that student to be used later on in life. Outside of my work as a teacher and tutor, I enjoy reading books from all levels. I strongly believe that reading is the foundational skill that, once mastered, carries an individual further than any other skill in life.
I am passionate about helping students because it is my desire that children are equipped with the proper study skills and knowledge required to be successful in all aspects of their lives. I believe the success or failure of the student can be compared to that of a seed. If a seed receives sunlight, proper watering, and appropriate care, it is being given the chance to grow into something productive and beneficial to all of those touched by its leaves. However, if it is lacking in any of these areas, it is not being given the same opportunity to become the best plant it could be. This is why I love tutoring and the philosophy behind its usefulness. The tutor gives the student either sunlight, water, or other care that he/she needs depending on the different situations to equip and enable that student to grow to his/her fullest potential. In my experience working with students, tutoring provides a comfort zone for a student to get one-on-one assistance in any subject. Many students need that one-on-one time, without classroom distractions, to practice and master concepts. The additional time enables students to understand their subject area and practice it in a safe setting which increases learning ability and subject mastery.
