I began teaching in 2009 when, as a graduate student, I was hired to teach an undergraduate literature course at the University of Maryland. Before that, I'd never given much thought to teaching, but within a few weeks, I noticed how much I enjoyed the combination of improvisation and careful planning needed for truly effective instruction. In short, I was hooked. While teaching that undergraduate literature course, I also began tutoring local high school students in standardized test preparation, and after only a few months, I increased more than twenty students' scores on both the ACT and SAT by an average of ten percent.
After receiving my Master in Fine Arts Degree from the University of Maryland, I moved to Manhattan to join the New York City Teaching Fellows, earning a teaching certification and undergoing field training at John Dewey High School in Brooklyn, NY. Later, I worked as a writing specialist at the famed Harlem Children's Zone, where I helped underachieving students with their academic, creative, and professional writing skills. I also resumed tutoring the ACT and SAT with Manhattan-based A-List Education; I helped one student improve her ACT composite score from 20 to 30 and another to improve his ACT composite score from 27 to 34.
Most recently, I taught 10th grade English at a private school in Baltimore. Currently, I tutor students across the globe in a variety of subjects, teach an adult education class, and cover prep basketball for Overtime Sports.
