What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is to cater to the individual student. Everyone learns differently, so it is important to be dynamic and utilize methods that the student will benefit from.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session, I will conduct a basic review of the material in order to assess the student's aptitude and grasp on the material.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
One can help a student become an independent learner by teaching them strategies for study and in class awareness.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I will help a student stay motivated by continually connecting the subject at hand with the big picture. I will remind them of how it will be valuable to them in the future.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
If a student has difficulty in a certain area, I will continually reinforce the concept. I will periodically return to it until a firm handle is gained.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
In order to aid students with reading comprehension, I will first isolate the central issue. If it is an issue with vocabulary, for instance, I will teach them to use context clues to determine the meaning.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I have found particular success by first evaluating a student's learning style. After I know this, I will shape my tutoring sessions.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
In order to get a student excited about a subject, I enjoy using positive reinforcement. For instance, with younger students, I sometimes reward correct answers with stickers or other incentives.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
In order to ensure comprehension, I will issue practice quizzes that they will complete independently.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I build a student's confidence by celebrating their successes and minimizing their failures. Continuous positivity in the face of adversity is crucial.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I evaluate a student's needs by establishing their strengths and weaknesses. After I have obtained this information, I will cater my sessions accordingly.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
In my tutoring, I enjoy a vast amount of dynamism. If a student isn't grasping a concept, I will shift the method of tutoring. For instance, if a student does not respond to traditional practice questions, I will adapt and introduce an alternate strategy like flash cards.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
This varies with the subject and the student's learning style. Generally, I will utilize the supplied text, visual aids, memorization aids (flash cards), etc.
