How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would find out what interests the student and try to find a way to incorporate that into the lessons, so that the student wants to learn.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try to break down that skill or concept into skills or concepts that the student already knows.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would try to find books on subjects the student is interested in, and use those to find passages and create questions to help enhance the student's comprehension. Once they can master it on subjects they like, I would slowly broaden the subjects so that the student learns how to use context to help with comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Engaging the student's attention is the most important thing to do. Using their interests in questions and keeping them active in their own learning is usually successful.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Trying to bring in things they are already interested in should help the student be more engaged.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to determine where the student is at on the first session. Once I am familiar with the student's level, I can start practicing and building the student up to where they want to be.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I mostly use online resources. Unless it is for reading, in which case I bring in library books. I will also work with whatever materials the student already has.
