Kay: Pflugerville tutor
Certified Tutor
I'm a graduate of Columbia University and one of the best middle school math teachers in New York State.
My experience and beliefs make me an excellent tutor. I teach fifth grade math at a charter school. Last year, my students' math state test scores were the sixth highest in New York State. My belief that every student can succeed and my relentless pursuit of that goal enables our success. Every day, I analyze student work to diagnose strengths and weaknesses and form individualized plans to accelerate every student's understanding. My engaging teaching, high expectations, progressive curriculum, and strong relationships with students and parents ensure that the plan is implemented to the highest level. With excellent, passionate teaching, every student can excel.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, drawing, and exploring the city. Whenever I have the chance, I head upstate to go hiking. I look forward to getting to know you and your student and help your student grow as a learner, student, and person!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In the first session, I focus on building a trusting relationship with the student and parent. Whether the student is preparing for a test or is looking for a more long term tutor, a trusting relationship enables strong, lasting, and quick academic growth.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I help my students become independent learners by implementing systems for them to track their own progress, and by teaching them how to research answers to their questions. For many students, lack of organization inhibits their capacity to be truly independent learners. I insist that all of my students use a planner and write down all academic responsibilities and deadlines. This essential step helps students internalize their next steps so they can succeed.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I help students get and stay motivated by cultivating a true love of learning, ensuring that they write down all assignments, and by staying in touch with students throughout the week to ensure they stay on track.
What is your teaching philosophy?
I approach every student as a person first and a learner second. Strong, trusting relationships are at the root of all learning, and students learn best when supported and pushed by a caring, consistent adult.
