What is your teaching philosophy?

For me, teaching, especially tutoring, is not only about knowledge, but mostly about commitment and clear communication from the teacher. I want to know my students, the desired educational purpose of the tutoring, and their learning goals. I like to bring a lot of energy as well.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I want to talk to the student and learn about their struggles or challenges. From there, I want to start designing a teaching plan that we can both agree upon.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I want to bring the proper tools and methods to the student while showing a positive example. Real interest will always fuel memory and speed up the learning curve.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

My strategy consists of bringing new exercises, different challenges, distinct tools and methods. Never settling down is primordial.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Patience is a virtue! Bringing new angles is a strategy that I like to use with new examples, for instance.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

First, knowing where the difficulties stem from is critical. Then, dividing the problem into smaller ones - i.e. the reading material into smaller units.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Listening to the student, instead of shoving my own teaching beliefs, allows me to cater to the student's needs and be more effective.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Learning is incredibly exciting. I want to be as enthusiastic as possible in my attitude. Then, I need to bring new methods and tools to increase the curiosity of the student.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Testing is very important, but I don't want to associate it with stress, as it is too often done in the educational world. When it's done regularly through different methods, it becomes a healthy habit for the student and reinforces the understanding of the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I love to learn about my students. Understanding what makes them unique and showing it to them goes a long way to build confidence. Then I just need to apply this method to the specific subject.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

First, I listen to them. What are the learning goals? What are the struggles/issues/challenges that the student faces? This dialog is ongoing and dictates the methods and tools that I will use to meet the student's needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt the exercises, methods and tools to what the students tell me, as well as by their struggles and their responsiveness to specific methods and tools. Then, I can implement the unique tutoring plan with the appropriate pace and the most interesting methods and tools. I will continually reassess those methods and tools to constantly cater to the evolving student's needs.
