Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I received my Bachelors of Arts in Sociology and International Studies, including one year of study in Kenya. After graduating, I worked for several years as a systems analyst for a medical software company, and later for a children's hospital. This fall, I began a master's program in Cultural Foundations of Education. I teach ESL as part of my practicum in a local community center, and have also taught English in El Salvador. I am proficient in Spanish, including four months of intensive study at a Spanish language school, and am very familiar with how Spanish is taught in a classroom.

Additionally, I have several months of experience tutoring in classrooms (especially middle school reading), and also have some experience tutoring the US naturalization test. I hope to complete my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification by June.

I am passionate about many subjects, including Spanish, ESL, English, History, and Political Science. I attempt to ground my teaching and tutoring in the daily experiences, motivations, and goals of the student, customizing the materials to meet their needs and learning styles. I believe that education is a two-way street: we can all be teachers, and we can all be learners.
