Martine

Certified Tutor

I enjoyed studying several subjects particularly math and science. I pursued a Bachelor's Degree in Science at University of South Florida and now I am doing my medical internship to later specialize in pediatrics. I love working with young children. I started tutoring elementary students as an undergrad with Americorps, which gave me the opportunity to work with all ages from 6 yrs-18 yrs old. I tutored mostly in math, science, Civics and reading/writing. I enjoy helping people and a better way to help the youth achieve their academic goals is by tutoring them in a way that they can understand by breaking the subject down using examples to make it simple and clear to understand. I have few hobbies besides my books, I love drawing flowers and traveling. I visited few places in the Caribbean and I took the opportunity to take pictures of the most beautiful flowers i could find to later draw and frame them. I also like going to the movies, comedy movies are my favorite.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I like to teach by showing examples of related materials.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I normally find out more about the student. I also ask which teaching method does he/she prefer?

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help by showing the student strategies to help solve the work quickly.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I usually keep the explanation simple and avoid overwhelming the student with too much information.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would give the student a short break and take a different approach to explain the material.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I first let them read and ask what they understand; then, I point out the keyword to take from the paragraph.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Showing any student's examples is usually very successful.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I make the subject in question fun to learn. I employ events that interest them to get them into the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

For a reading assignment, I take turns to read and pause to make sure the student understands up to that point before proceeding. For math, after showing multiple examples, I give the student one to do to see if he/she gets it.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build a student's confidence by letting him/her know it is okay to ask questions until he/she gets it. It doesn't matter how long it takes; I'm there to help.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate the student's needs by finding out what subject the student struggles mostly with or which section of a subject.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Whatever method works for the student is what I do.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I usually ask the students what they are currently covering in class; from that, I print out materials to bring to work on together during the session.
