We worked on the student's homework for next class, which included writing a letter using preterit and imperfect, writing an opinion piece about the salaries of professional athletes, and reading a passage about the Santiago de Compostela pilgrims. It was a productive session, and she seems to be doing well.

We held our second session today. We spent most of the session time teaching the basic, formal and informal ways of introducing oneself. Then we role played various situations by first going through the scene in English and then reading out loud the scenes in Spanish. Lessons for next week will focus on the different usage of "ser" y "estar" and various verbs.

5 students attended the first session of Spanish. They will be able to accomplish the following communicative goals: Greet others, introduce yourself, and say goodbyes; Exchange personal information; Ask and answer questions; Subject pronouns and the Present Tense of the verbs ser and tener; and Recite numbers from 0 to 20. The lesson went well, but need to begin at a slower pace. Next session, the Spanish alphabet along with colors will be presented.

Spanish Tutoring review by Cynthia in Portsmouth
In this session, we went over new chapter vocabulary (family members and the beach) as well as the imperfect verb tense (I used to, I was, etc.). We also went over a homework assignment the student had on writing sentences and descriptions to ask about vocabulary. We also discussed situations in which the imperfect (I was...) and the preterit (an isolated event) are used together to illustrate an interrupted action (ex: I was reading a book and then there was a knock at the door).

The student and I studied for her Spanish test tomorrow. The test is on subjunctive and indicative moods and will also focus on using infinitives appropriately. She was successful in all areas, as she was able to identify trigger words that are associated with the subjunctive as well as make various examples indicative and use the infinitive. I think she will do great tomorrow. Best of luck!

Spanish Tutoring review by Kristen in Portsmouth
Today, we reviewed for the student's test this Friday. She said she thought she needed the most help/practice with reading comprehension, so we primarily focused on that. We read 4 passages. I had her read them aloud in Spanish and then translate the passage sentence by sentence. She then answered some questions about them to confirm her understanding. I told her that she could read some other passages in her workbook for additional practice before the test and to try to figure out what the words she doesn't know mean by using context clues. I emphasized that the main point of the exercise is to get the general idea of the passage and to be able to answer basic questions about it; she doesn't need to know every single word.
