Therefore, my teaching style is driven by problem solving. As we work on...

Recent PHP Tutoring Session Notes
We went over the student's math homework. We worked through it and he understands it all which is good since it is review. We are going to be meeting tomorrow to do chemistry as well (which is due on Friday). Good session.
Working on a large project with the student for the majority of the time. We are working on a new approach to her spelling-- having her try to visualize the word and then spell it, rather than sounding it out phonetically... hopefully this approach will help!
During this session, we went over some math problems and old exams that had been taken. She seemed to have a strong understanding of the topic. We also went over some of her writing to try and learn some new writing techniques.
The student and I covered the usual reading strategies (taking a 5-second break, reading for structure and author's intent, change-in-direction words, etc.; eliminating extreme, off-topic, or too-broad answer choices; guessing when you can eliminate at least one answer choice). We also discussed the importance of the vocab list and ways to make vocab studying more efficient (flashcards; making up your own example sentences; sorting words into groups by topic or tone).
The student worked on using better transition words and sentences, reviewing what type of transition words work best in agreement and contradictory phrases, We also practiced distinguishing what facts best support arguments (to prepare for our writing a persuasive argument). We edited his draft from last week, and there were very few errors and very minor (2 spelling, one comma), so we decided that would be the final draft for that assignment. The outline for the persuasive argument was an introduction, 3 main arguments with 3 supporting details per argument, and a conclusion. We also used a graphic organizer to outline, and his homework for this week is to write a rough draft using strong transition words, supporting details and examples.
The student and I continued preparing for the January 28th SAT, working through two reading sections, one math section, and one writing section. He demonstrated surprisingly substantial improvement in all sections; his math and writing, in particular, were very strong. Three additional sections were assigned for homework which will be gone over next class.
