Recent GED Tutoring Session Notes
We continued to work through math concepts for the GED. I discovered that her memory of basic concepts is strong. She has challenges applying it to word problems. I also have her assessment results from a course she took. We will also transition into more Science soon.
The student and I continued reviewing the Social Studies section of the test. We went over strategies for how to answer the questions efficiently. We focused on questions pertaining to graphs and charts because those are the questions that the student struggles with the most.
Today we mostly worked on triangles (right, acute, scalene, etc.). We discussed the definitions of each and then worked on problems from the book. I think the most important thing is that the student learn and understand the differences between triangles so that she can apply it to the problems. Next week we will continue to review triangles but also go over angles. I also plan to go over quadrilaterals and graphing.
The student is going to be taking the math portion of the GED. Today we reviewed some basic operations so that he's got a good foundation to build on. Specifically, we worked on factoring, finding the common denominator, finding the greatest common factor, and adding fractions. We also touched on ratios, squares, and square roots. I left him with some worksheets as well as some websites that will allow him some more practice GED problems. He will really benefit from some drilling of the basics, so we'll be working on that next session.
This was our first session, so i spent a few minutes getting to know the student and providing him with my background. He only wants to work on the math portions of the test, so we began discussing general strategies, sections of the test, and content. On content, we covered: numbers and operations; rounding whole numbers; comparing, ordering and grouping; choosing the operation; multiplying and dividing whole numbers; steps for solving word problems; and order of operations. In the test prep book, we covered pages 456-475. I assigned some homework for him, and suggested he make flashcards to learn the multiplication table.
We had a more productive session. We covered the first 10 pages or so on the Algebra & Geometry chapter, which addressed the issue of when to use addition/subtraction/multiplication/division/powers/roots in algebra problems, as well as a section on word problems. We will continue working on the chapter during our meeting tomorrow.
