I am a graduate of The Citadel and Temple University. At the former, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Foreign Languages (German and Russian). At the latter, I earned my Master of Arts in German. I also completed the Teachers for Secondary Schools Program at the University of Southern Maine. As a life-long learner myself, I am passionate about learning and teaching. It is with great personal satisfaction that I have been able to help many students reach their personal goals. In my work with high school students, I have been successful in preparing them to excel in History or German in college. Many of my adult learners have been faced with the daunting experience of having to relocate to a German-speaking country and I have prepared them to thrive in a new culture with a new language. Regardless of the subject that I teach or tutor, I believe in a direct, hands-on approach that actively engages the students' interests, helping them build self-confidence, while steadily improving their skills and knowledge. As I have lived in Europe and have traveled extensively in several parts of Europe, both European History and German Language and Culture are my favorite subjects to share with students. In my free time, I enjoy reading, stamp- and coin-collecting, hiking, biking, and volunteer work.

I graduated from Pace University with a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature as well as minors in Creative Writing, Queer Studies, and Sociology/Anthropology. I have also completed one semester of graduate level Creative Writing courses at the University of San Francisco. Currently, I am applying to graduate programs to obtain my Masters in Special Education. My personal interests include reading, writing, cooking, music, traveling, exploring the city, and spending time with friends and family.Throughout my working career, I have gained teaching experience with students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. In the past, I have worked as a college level writing tutor for both Pace University and the University of San Francisco. As a tutor, I worked with the general student population as well as English language learners and students registered with disability services. In both of these experiences, I helped students from the beginning of the writing process to the end.Along with this background in higher education, I also have training with younger students as well. Through a private Math and Reading Center, I guided children age's three to eight through math and reading assignments. One of the most rewarding teaching experiences I have had is with my current job as a clinician at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes. As a clinician, I work one on one with students to improve their decoding and reading comprehension skills through a specifically designed reading program and lesson plan. I also worked with a variety students ranging from ages five to twenty-one, many of whom had diagnosed learning differences. While my background is primarily in English and Language Arts, I am not limited to just this subject areas. I also have knowledge in History and the Social Sciences, as reading comprehension and strong writing skills are at the base of mastering these courses especially at the higher-grade levels. In general one of my favorite aspects about tutoring is helping kids fall in love with reading and writing by improving their skills and confidence in this area particularly by engaging their interests.Another aspect I love about tutoring, is working with students who have learning differences and other special needs. I myself have struggled throughout my life with learning differences so I understand on a personal level both the challenges and triumphs students with learning differences go through. I also enjoy serving as a mentor to students with learning differences and sharing with them my own learning and executive functioning strategies that have helped me over the years. In each of these positions I have gained so much knowledge from the interactions I have had with students. I have learned to tailor my teaching style and method to meet each individual student's needs and personality. I also understand how important it is to have patience, compassion, empathy and acceptance when working with students.

I am currently studying Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I have had experience tutoring students of all ages through programs at my school and the local library. I also teach private percussion lessons to help students prepare for auditions and concerts. While I tutor many subjects, I especially enjoy helping students with math, physics, computer science, and music. In my free time, I enjoy playing percussion (much to my neighbors dismay) and tinkering with robotics. I also enjoyed scouting as a kid and still love hiking and exploring the outdoors.

Learning should above all, be fun!Granted, most of my tutoring and teaching experience has been with Elementary School ages, but as with any aspect of life and learning, I believe it is possible to adapt any subject area to make it interesting, either by changing the way it is taught or switching the way it is viewed into a more positive mindset.I have an Elementary (K-8) general teaching certificate, a 7-12 English teaching certificate, as well as an AZ fingerprint clearance card and First Aid and CPR Certification. I enjoy working with all ages. My most enjoyable teaching and tutoring moments have been watching people problem solve a new way to accomplish a task on their own, and see how that enables them to start taking the initiative for their own learning and problem solving.

I hold a degree in English from Boston University and just finished my second year with Teach For America. I moved to New York to study drawing and architecture, but my passion for education remains. I believe that students need to learn how to ask the right questions so that they can navigate the increasingly sophisticated world around them. This belief informs my teaching style; I act as a guide for students rather than someone dispensing information. Nothing is more enjoyable than the look on a student's face when he or she has just realized that he or she can solve a problem without anyone's help. When I'm not tutoring, I love walking through New York for design inspiration and taking carpentry, metalworking, and illustration classes.
