We added an additional session for over the winter break. Today we worked on writing silly sentences about elves. We looked at picture cards, The student created a sentence and then wrote it while looking at a model. We also practiced sounding out CVC words and reviewing sight words. We ended the session reading a leveled book and video taped his reading which he was very excited about.

Student B and I read from I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg. We set the stage for our new novel and worked on visualizing the scene. Student C and I practiced penmanship and spelling.

The student and I read "A day at school" and "Campus" from Oxford Picture Dictionary, and "Using the Definite Article" from the grammar book. He could speak more complete sentences, but fluency is still his weakness when communicating with people. For homework, he is to complete exercise 3.1 in the grammar book, write a short essay, and write out a New Year's resolution.

The student read several short second grade passages: "The Bus," "Fish," "Boats" and "Hats". He answered 3/5 comprehension questions correctly for the last passage. He also practiced his sight words (K-1). He practiced basic addition. He completed some math worksheets supplied by his teacher (basic facts, word problems, know the operation). When completing simple, 2-sentence word problems, he completed 6/10 accurately.

For this session, we reviewed the student's social studies chapter, over which she would be having an exam on the following Monday. We went through section by section and created outlines for her to use as study materials. At the end of each section, we used the short questions to review what she had learned and assess areas that we needed to focus on.

The student and I worked on more phonics rules and reading skills, and went over the days of the week (which he has learned very well) and months (he learned most of them, but still needs to review). Then we worked on conversation, and were talking about his family and his country. This is information that he was very excited to share, and he was able to hold a conversation well, with only a small amount of words needing to be translated.
