I am currently studying Biomedical Science in Anglia Ruskin University. I have been tutoring for the past 5 years. I volunteered tutoring Punjabi for 4 years and now I have been providing online Maths and Science tutoring for over a year with another platform, this experience improved my communication and confidence. I love tutoring as I truly love to pass on my knowledge to the students. My tutoring experience has improved my communication, as I learned how to communicate ideas with a number of people by using different communication styles, which helps the students to understand the topic that I am teaching and I believe this is a crucial skill that will help me to connect with the student as a tutor. If the student was to struggle with a particular concept, in those circumstances, I will modify my speech style to a caring tone to repeat the concept or even rephrase the statement, so it becomes easier for the students to digest the information. I will also use different study techniques such as mind maps, videos and animation, so that the student can understand the topic that I am teaching. I will aim to show an empathetic and compassionate approach which will avoid harming the self-esteem and mental health of the student, as I recognise that it is one of the core values to have compassion and to improve everyone's lives. As a tutor, I also learned that my established rapport with students has allowed me to support the students by teaching them in an engaging way that simulates a fun environment so that they are able to understand the most difficult concept at an ease, similarly I would adapt this to my role by supporting them in a way that will virtually make them feel better and improve their health. Also, the bonding with my tutees will help me to relate with them as I portray myself in their light and I showed them that I have been in their position and I fully empathise with their situation, if they were to feel a bit down. Presumably, this quality is essential as a tutor because it wouldn`t only help me to build a good relationship with the student, but it will also help me to win their trust which will allow me to provide good customer satisfaction.
My experience of being an Assistant Teacher has improved my leadership skill as I had an opportunity to teach multiple students with different needs and struggles, where I learned to triage the students into two groups in terms of the support they need. The main reason why I did this was to help them in the topics they really need help with, I achieved this by teaching the students using different resources and styles to make them feel supported and ensured that by the end of the day all the students were on the same level and had a similar understanding of that topic. This skill is still proven to be useful to me as a tutor as I might have an opportunity to work with groups of students, where I would have to use a strategic plan to support them, so I would put across this triage method to prioritise the students who need the most support and this will be made possible by using my leadership skills, as I would aim to help those students who struggle the most so that all of the students can learn and adapt to the lesson at their own speed.
