CLEP Tutoring FAQ
The CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) exams are offered in 33 subjects by College Board, the makers of the SAT and AP exams. CLEP allows students to take college-level exams in subjects of their choosing for college credit or for higher placement in a college course sequence. Since there are no formal classes to prepare you for these exams, as there are with AP exams, you may find it helpful to pursue CLEP exam tutoring as you prepare to take your respective test. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with an experienced, qualified instructor dedicated to helping you achieve your target scores on whichever CLEP exams you choose to take.
A CLEP exam tutor's approach first seeks to help you acquire the knowledge necessary for success on test day. Whether you are taking introductory psychology or calculus, your tutor can work with you to clarify any difficult concepts or problems you might encounter as you learn the subject material. Based on your learning style and the topics you need to master, your tutor can develop a personalized learning plan to help you acquire, remember, and apply the subject's information over the weeks in which you are preparing to take the CLEP exam. Through homework assignments, in-session work, and practice test questions, your tutor can help you test and reinforce the knowledge you have gained.
Since the CLEP exams are standardized tests, CLEP tutoring also focuses on teaching you proven test-taking strategies. From narrowing down choices to familiarization of the test format beforehand, an experienced tutor can help you gain a strategic edge against the kinds of test questions with which you will be presented. Some test-taking strategies might include learning how to read actively, how to eliminate nonsense answers, and how to identify the quickest approach to solve a problem. A private tutor can also help you develop time management skills. Your tutor can give you some kind of idea as to how much time you should be taking on each exam so that you can complete the entire test.
While you may be able to find test taking tips from other sources, what you likely won't receive is a consultation concerning what study method or methods will work best for you. There are many ways to study, but unless you know which way is the most effective for you personally, you may be wasting valuable time. A private tutor can help identify your strengths and weaknesses, and figure out exactly how you should be studying to achieve your best possible score.
Studying for any type of standardized test can be very stressful. They are often massive undertakings and it is very easy to feel overwhelmed. You may be unsure where to begin with studying or you may feel uneasy about the amount of material you are expected to know. A private tutor can act as a guide, who helps you through the entire process and provides plenty of support and encouragement along the way.
At Varsity Tutors, we know that you are busy, and we want tutoring to be a low-stress, positive part of your preparation for your CLEP exam or exams. We can help you connect with a tutor who is flexible with the times and places they can meet, so they can work around your schedule to meet when and where it is most convenient for you. Varsity Tutors' live learning platform enables you to meet with your tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This makes tutoring both flexible and convenient.
A private tutor can direct you toward the right types of preparation materials you will need throughout tutoring, and they can offer insight and advice on how to plan your tutoring and studying as the test approaches. If you are taking a CLEP exam, consider contacting Varsity Tutors to help you connect with a qualified tutor today.

Recent CLEP Tutoring Session Notes
I had her go over content from her flashcard set she purchased and note concepts or cards she had trouble with. We went through those concepts pertaining to chemical foundations and basic biochemistry. She is bright and is understanding the material and asking questions as she goes through it all. She will continue on to the cells, enzymes, and chemical transformations sections next when we meet on Wednesday.
Today we reviewed present, preterite, and present participle forms of verbs with special attention to verbs listed on the student's study vocab lists. Her test scores continue to improve and she has advanced through the second phase of her internship application process, which is very exciting!
We went over some basics of chemistry today using an AP book as a study guide. Today, the student did not take any notes as the session was more of a broad review. We plan to continue meeting at a bookstore in order to use resources provided there, and I encouraged the student to start self-studying so that the sessions can be used most efficiently to answer his more difficult questions.
Today, we decided which chapters we would cover in the duration of our time together to prepare the student for her class. We briefly went over the introductory algebra review section. Then we went through the first three sections of chapter one including graphs, domain, range, factoring and some properties of functions. She was very comfortable with the material and had strong prerequisite knowledge.
We covered the chapter of biomolecules today. We went over the concepts in this chapter and we finished the assigned homework. Our next scheduled meeting date is Sunday.
The student is preparing for a CLEP Precalculus test, and we have a large amount of material to cover in a short time. Today, we looked at the outline of topics to expect on the test, and we began to attack those topics one by one. We talked about function notation, domain, linear functions, equations for circles and ellipses, quadratic functions, absolute value, and solving systems of equations. If we can relax and keep at it we can get through all of this material and prepare her to pass this test. For next time, I will organize topics into 10-minute blocks and prepare practice problems.
