We went over empirical formula and combustion analysis. She gets the concepts quickly. She had great attitude toward the material reviewed. We went over the general problem solving strategies toward a combustion analysis.

We covered a variety of topics including: elements, isotopes, neutrons, electron, orbital shape, electron configuration, and quantum numbers. We finished a whole package of problems. The student loved the material and he was very energetic. His understanding was amazing. He was able to understand very quickly. He was able to do problems that I gave him.

Today was my first session with the student. His teacher gives him packets covering the chapters taught in class. For the last couple of weeks, the packets are from chapters 5 and 9 in his book. We went over chapter 5 concepts and questions today (biodiversity, species interaction, and population control). I think he understood most of the concepts pretty well. I encouraged him to find examples of the concepts covered in this chapter in real life so he will be able to understand/remember what he has read in class. We began chapter 9 (we reached section 9.2), and will finish that on Friday. He was very good about doing the work and putting in effort during our session. He did not wait for me to explain everything to him, instead he tried to work it out and put it in his own words, which is a very good skill! I think we can build on this tendency and he will rapidly improve in this subject.

The student worked on his physics lab. He plotted out the data points that we calculated last time. We worked through the somewhat challenging technical part of working with spreadsheets, and he indicated he understood the concepts behind what we were doing. I think the next lab will go smoother now that we've covered the how-to of spreadsheets.

We reviewed solving for empirical and molecular formulas of compounds based on given masses of product. We used mole conversions and dividing by the smallest subscript to obtain least whole integer values. After correcting homework, we previewed upcoming material on solving problems involving stoichiometry, determining limiting reagents, and percent yields.

The student had homework questions regarding principal quantum numbers, so we worked through nearly half of them as there were many assigned. Most of the questions didn't seem to bother him too much. There were several concepts that he had not covered in class that were tested in the homework, so I explained them with the help of the textbook as a visual aid. He didn't have too much trouble with this, as once he got some practice questions answered, he seemed to feel very comfortable, and more importantly, confident in being able to answer these types of questions (which tested on the topic of ionization energies).
