We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

The student and I were able to begin the completion of an assignment focusing on Energizing Holdings. We were able to successfully evaluate the company's Altman Z-Score (as well as the score for P&G) and use this information to evaluate their debt rating (and estimated yields based upon historical research), and then estimate the YTM on two debt issues (and compared this to a current market yield as well).

We went over Units 16-20 from the student's teacher's slides. We covered long-run perfect competition cost and profit, imperfect competition/monopolies, economic rent and rent-seeking behavior, and public/common goods. While she found the cost and profit lectures more challenging due to convoluted math explanations, she was very confident about monopolies and rent-seeking behavior and was able to provide many real-world examples. She seemed a lot more engaged with those topics. In our next session, we will hopefully finish going over the rest of the slides so we can dive into the practice exams and midterms.

The student and I concluded our discussion on CVP analysis by doing another problem set on that. Then we moved on to incremental analysis; we did another problem set on that in various forms (make/ buy, accept/ reject, retain/ replace). She did alert me that her next exam would be most likely moved up to next Tuesday, so we are planning to meet twice before then: once to discuss the last part of the unit, and then the other time to review for the exam.

The student and I covered LIFO/FIFO inventory and COGS calculation, straight-line amortization, effective interest amortization, and other bond topics. The student was working to improve upon these stated topics. He was quite eager to understand and apply these topics, and we went through several examples of each topic/problem until he felt comfortable. He was assigned to continue to study until the exam on Thursday.

The student and I covered the income statement, balance sheet, retained earnings statement, and the statement of cashflow. We identified the different items that appear on each of the statement and how to calculate each statement.

The student and I discussed earnings per share calculation, the current ratio calculations, and how to find this information on a company's 10-K form. We also discussed the causes of increases or decreases in both of these ratios. We then took a step away from this current assignment and talked about balance sheet items and the effect that loans have on the balance sheet. Additionally, we talked about the calculations involved in the straight line depreciation method and how the IRS does not allow many companies to use this method. We ended by working through a few of her discussion-based questions about inventory and leasing practices for the company that she selected.
