This day we went over more algebra, imaginary numbers, and test prep.  A lot of the problems had many steps to it, but they were manageable.  I explained that it's a very tedious process, and clearly when through each step with the student.  By the end, he was doing his problems fully with no shortcuts.

The student and I began our session today with something new: Syllables. We discussed what a syllable is and practiced dividing various words into syllables. She caught on immediately and did a great job marking words where they are divided into syllables and then counting the total number of syllables per word. We then moved on to some multiplication using factors of 0, 1, 2, and 3. We practiced counting by 3s to increase her comfort. We reviewed punctuation (periods and question marks) by coming up with sentences and questions and identifying them as such. Finally, we finished the session with identifying dates on the April calendar.

First session. He had worked on a few sections, and found grammar and mechanics to be a weak area. We discussed the problems he had completed and he was able to self correct a few of his errors. He struggled with the first part of the ability section. This is another area I will focus on. I timed him on a synonym section, he did well and finished within the time limit. We will work on timed drills to help him build endurance and maintain focus. Discussed strategies for each section and the overall exam. H.W.- two timed sections, ability & reading.

Both students memorized the previous lesson very well. I am very happy with their performance. Today, I taught them how to say activities and items they enjoy, such as candy, ice cream, and basketball. I also taught them how to say "I love Chinese" in Chinese, since they constantly say it in English.  We also learned lesson 7 in the textbook, which was about being a good elementary school student and loving teachers, classmates, and the school.  Their homework is to finish the workbook pages for chapter 7 in book A.

The student wrote an in-class essay last week in preterit and imperfect tense. She got a B and an opportunity to correct it for a higher grade. We went over the essay step by step so she understood her errors. After the essay we reviewed preterit, imperfect, past participle, indicative, and subjunctive tenses.

The student and I had a great session, and primarily, we reviewed the expectations associated with both of her classes. Each course involves a number of written assignments, and for at least one, I provided her with guidance on how to approach the content (as it was based upon a case). I also gave her an example of how to address one of her discussion responses pertaining to a corporation with a specific marketing strategy and how this affects the company from an operations management perspective in multiple areas. Ongoing, our strategy will focus on reviewing what she completes each week in order to provide recommendations and suggestions. I also told her I am happy to review any drafts she completes in the interim.
