Special Education Functional Math (Grades 6-8)
Grades 6-8
In this course, 6th through 8th graders in Special Education programs will learn and practice functional math skills related to measurements, money, and time. These skills are critical for learners’ day-to-day lives, and provide opportunities for practical application of fundamental math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Students should come prepared for class with a simple calculator along with paper and pencil to work through math exercises, as well as functional items for measurement and calculation. Suggested items include a ruler, tape measure, liquid measuring cups, dry measuring cups, and physical money such as coins and $1 and $5 bills.
The course can be taken multiple times to both reinforce skills and allow the repetition required to master skills and meet IEP goals.
Over the six-session course, students will learn and practice:
-
Session 1: Measuring length and width along with adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing those measurements
-
Session 2: Measuring wet and dry ingredients along with doubling or dividing those measurements
-
Sessions 3-4: Counting money including calculating how much change should be returned from a purchase
-
Sessions 5-6: Calculating time including understanding units of time and adding or subtracting to estimate time
