Orton Gillingham Reading Group A

Grades 2-5

Was your child getting extra reading support at school? Is your child on a 504 Plan or an IEP to support reading fluency and comprehension? Does your child have dyslexia? If you've answered YES to any of these questions, working with a certified reading specialist in a small group may be a great option for you. It's also a wonderful way for your child to get the support they need while meeting other students with similar challenges, so they do not feel so alone in their struggle. Students with language-based learning differences require additional support with reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary knowledge. This weekly class can benefit students who need additional support with decoding skills, reading comprehension, vocabulary knowledge and understanding, and/or reading fluency.

Group A

  • Group A will focus on decoding words with digraphs, blends, and short vowel sounds along with high-frequency words and non-phonetic "red words" (examples: the, to, too, was, were, have, has, once, twice, etc.)

  • Because we are working in small groups, it's important to do a quick assessment that you can do at home in order to choose the right group for your child

Assessment Passage (Cold Read):

  • Home Assessment: Have your child read the passage below just ONE time (no practicing so you can genuinely evaluate their ability), and time them for 1 minute. Count up the number of words they were able to read in that 1 minute along with the number of words they read incorrectly. Based on this score, choose the appropriate group.

  • Fish have fins. Fins can be big. Fins can be little. Fins can be thin. The fins help fish swim. The tail fin helps fish. It helps fish zip fast. The top fin helps fish. It helps fish not tip over. The side fins help fish. They help fish stop.

  • If your child read 15–25 words and made 5-7 mistakes, this is the right group. If they read more words and made fewer mistakes, please see the assessments for groups B or C.

Live Group Classes Include:

  • Live course instruction where you’ll meet face-to-face with your instructor and fellow students in a virtual classroom

  • Interactive and collaborative sessions where students learn course-specific lessons as a group

  • An expert instructor and an immersive learning experience in a class with limited seating

  • Class content is purpose built for drop-in or ongoing attendance
