About Nareissa Smith, Esq.
Nareissa Smith is a law professor-turned-journalist who teaches and writes about racial and gender justice issues. She is a graduate of Spelman College and Howard University School of Law. She is the creator and teacher of the popular Black History Basics class series in the Varsity Tutors Social Conscience Series and regularly teaches classes on the topics of culture, history, diversity, and law.
About the class
Today, everyone seems to agree that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a great man. People remember and recite his powerful I Have A Dream speech and praise his message of nonviolence. But how much do we really know about Dr. King? In this class, students will spend Dr. King’s birthday learning more about the often overlooked aspects of this remarkable man’s life, legacy, and message, including:
