Description

Was your child getting extra reading support at school? Is your child on a 504 Plan or an IEP to support reading fluency and comprehension? Does your child have dyslexia? If you've answered YES to any of these questions, working with a certified reading specialist in a small group may be a great option for you. It's also a wonderful way for your child to get the support they need while meeting other students with similar challenges to they do not feel so alone in their struggle.

Students with language based learning differences require additional support with reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary knowledge. This weekly class can benefit student who need additional support with decoding skills, reading comprehension, vocabulary knowledge and understanding, and/or reading fluency.

Group B will focus on decoding words with digraphs, blends, and short vowel sounds along with high frequency words and non phonetic "red words" (examples: the, to, too, was, were, have, has, once, twice, etc.). In a 1/1 setting, students would typically work with a specialist for 60-90 minutes. In the group setting, 2 hours allows for students to take turns reading out loud and breaks are built into the schedule.

Because we are working in small groups, it's important to do a quick assessment that you can do at home in order to choose the right group for your child.

Home Assessment: Have your child read the passage below, just ONE time (no practicing so you can genuinely evaluate their ability) and time them for 1 minute. Count up the number of words they were able to read in that 1 minute along with the number of words they read incorrectly. Based on this score, choose the appropriate group.

Assessment Passage (Cold Read):

Have you ever felt really stuffed after a big meal? Imagine if that meal were even larger than your own body! Could a stomach actually hold that much food? Amazingly, the black swallower's stomach can!

The black swallower is a fish that lives near the bottom of the ocean. Its big mouth and elastic stomach allow it to swallow other fish whole. A black swallower can consume a fish more than three times its own length! In order to make room for the bigger fish, the black swallower's stomach expands like a balloon. The stomach stretches out so much that it becomes transparent. Some people have found and studied dead black swallowers. They have seen large, whole fish still sitting in the black swallowers' stomachs.

Why do black swallowers eat such big meals? Deep in the ocean, food is difficult to find. Not many creatures inhabit these cold, dark waters. Perhaps the black swallower makes up for this scarce food supply by eating a lot at once. You might eat a lot too if you didn't know when your next meal was coming!

If your child had a lot of difficulty reading this passage, have them try the assessments for Group A. If your child read 50-75 words and had 8-10 mistakes, this is the right group. If they read more words and made less mistakes, please consider a 1/1 tutor.

I have a vast amount of experience in the Montessori pedagogy and have worked with children aged 18 months to 16 years of age. Being a non-diagnosed dyslexic student throughout primary and secondary school, I understand the struggles students have in today's school systems. I have devoted herself to aiding children with reading issues and general education. I have received certification in the Multi-Sensory approach from the Academy of Orton-Gillingham. Both Montessori education and the Orton-Gillingham approach allow children to understand the English language in a concrete manner. I am passionate about educating the whole child and being a support to the families. Also, I have had a successful art carrier and was a wall muralist. My work is displayed in several restaurants, schools, and private homes in the Washington DC area. My love for the arts is contagious and can be a great contribution to lessons. Also, I am working towards becoming an A.M.I. consultant. My personal goal is to aid as many children in achieving their personal goals throughout their school careers.

As an enthusiastic educator for over 10 years, I thoroughly enjoy guiding my students to their highest potential. Coming up with new ideas to guide a multi-sensory and individualized learning experience is one of my favorite aspects of this field. I am a patient, caring and understanding Orton Gillingham instructor. I find true joy in teaching students of all ages. Before becoming a teacher, I studied Psychology at the College of Charleston and graduated with my bachelor's degree. Through a reference from a former college professor, I began working as an ABA therapist. This lead to my knowledge of the Orton Gillingham approach to teaching. After earning my associate level Orton Gillingham accreditation, I have followed the OG approach which has proven to be highly successful as my students have made exceptional progress in reading, spelling, and writing. I look forward to meeting new students and guiding their progress.
