What's better than reading comic books? Creating them! And this summer, young artists will do just that. With live StarCourses from beloved DC artist Francis Manapul, aspiring comic book creators and graphic novelists will learn how to develop and draw compelling characters like The Flash, how to brainstorm epic narratives, and how to combine artwork with storytelling to bring their Super Hero visions to life.

In this program, learners will meet weekly with an expert instructor and small group of peers to explore the stages of writing and drawing comics.

Comic Book Creator Challenge

What better way to learn about being a comic book artist than creating an entire graphic novel? Winners of this challenge will have their comic book printed to share with family, friends, and fans!

Weekly Live Class Topics

Week One: Creating & Drawing Characters

Students begin by breaking down drawing techniques and discovering the secrets to illustrating like a pro while turning inspiration into action.

Week Two: Giving Characters Character

This week, students explore how to develop characters' personalities and emotions through the use of shapes and colors.

Week Three: Secrets of Spectacular Storytelling

How do you hook readers? Make the story compelling! This week, students will learn how to craft an engaging narrative that their readers will love.

Week Four: Setting the Scene

How do writers design and create the environments that their characters inhabit without taking too much time and energy away from the story itself? This week, students learn all about world-building.

Week Five: Animating Action

From lines of motion to sound effects, the details are important! This week, students will focus on tips and tricks that bring comic book action to life.

Week Six: Drawing Tools & Techniques

This week, students will start to master the art of proportion, shading, and line thickness to help their drawings truly take on a life of their own.
