I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I graduated from George Mason University with a BFA in Computer Game Design. During my time, I held 2 positions that have shaped how I interact with and help students and peers. The first was as a peer career advisor (PCA) at the university's career services office, where I conducted daily drop-in hours for students to come in and have me review their job application materials. In reviewing their resumes and cover letters, I evaluated where their strengths lie and how to best sell their strengths in writing, while providing additional resources should they be seeking specialized attention.

The second position was as a team lead in the Game Analysis and Design Interest Group (GADIG), a student-run, on campus game development studio. As a co-lead of our sound team, I worked with like-minded game designers, sound designers, and musicians to create high quality assets for the games we made, teaching them new techniques for music composition, audio editing, and basic programming and implementation. Through my time as a lead, as well as a PCA, I helped to foster a sense of community, and encouraged collaborative opportunities.

My teaching / tutoring experience can be stemmed back all the way to high school, helping my peers with math. In early college, I took part in many rounds of peer editing for English writing courses. When I provide feedback or lessons, I consider what the person already knows and has developed, and build upon it in a way that assures that they're on the right track, while providing the person with a newfound sense of confidence and understanding. I also strongly value my ability to provide new methods to achieve the right results, because everyone learns differently and deserves to learn in a way that's unique to them. The first step to learning is recognizing and respecting what you don't understand, so I as the teacher / tutor can craft an explanation that works best for the individual.
