I graduated from Brigham Young University with BS and MS degrees in Chemical Engineering with a focus on Environmental Science and a Minor in German. I had a very successful career as an engineer but after several years realized that I really enjoyed interacting with people. I then switched to a Human Resources Supervisor role in which I supervised the career development of 25 - 50 young engineers. I discovered that helping and serving others is my passion and I then took on several different types of assignments where I worked with people and applied my technical background whenever possible.
I worked in large companies where a variety of positions were available and I used my off-work time to gain teaching experience in a lot of different areas. While in Technical Service with the DuPont Company, I gave lectures to customers on the processing and use of engineering polymers. When I was with the Boeing Company, I organized and taught classes in cultural adaptability to employees going on international assignments. I taught classes in Technical Writing and Statistical Process Control for a year or so at a junior college. I taught fundamental German to young men and women who were heading to Germany/Austria for service assignments. I have helped teach English as a second language to immigrants. I served as a Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts of America and taught many young men about dozens of topics to earn merit badges. I have also been a tutor In Mathematics and Chemistry for college and high school students.
With such varied opportunities, I have found that I just really enjoy teaching. Helping others to get more proficient in a subject where they have interest is very satisfying to me. I have a background in Mathematics, Science (particularly Chemistry), German, English, Writing, and Human Relations. Tutoring or teaching in any of those areas would be subjects that I am comfortable with. I have traveled and worked a lot internationally and have come to value other cultures and people and would be comfortable teaching people from other nationalities. I feel that understanding your student(s) and his/her perspective about the subject of interest is a key part in preparing teaching material and approach. Everyone is different and everyone may learn in a different way, so sometimes creativity is needed to find the right approach to encourage learning.
