I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I hold a current K-8 teaching license and have a Master of Education from Marymount University. I have continued my education by completing coursework in a Graduate Professional Endorsement in Reading, Literacy and Learning from Longwood University. I most recently (Aug 2023 through May 2024) completed coursework in LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) through Lexia and a Graduate course from the American College of Education. I have eight years of experience as a classroom teacher (and on-line during the pandemic). But I have many more years of experience, including reading intervention through the public schools and private tutoring.

I love to teach! It is my passion! It is my purpose! Therefore, I keep continuing my education as a life-long learner to inspire students to become life-long learners, leaders and readers! Reading intervention is key to unlocking their comprehension skills. It is hard to comprehend what is being read if the reader is struggling with decoding the words being read. I have worked with many students, including those diagnosed with ADHD, to help provide the strategies and motivation to turn struggling readers into successful readers! I will incorporate your child's interests into my instruction so that they stay engaged and discover that reading is fun! My students have taken assessments where they fell far below the state assessment benchmark in the Fall to exceeding the state assessment benchmark in the Spring! I will provide a scope and sequence reading program that incorporates the current findings from the science of reading. The scope and sequence that I use can be found on the University of Florida Literacy Institute's (UFLI) website. This structured literacy program will empower your student with the skills needed to become a successful reader and speller! I look forward to working with your child!

I love my family! Family is also my passion and purpose! I am celebrating my 30th Anniversary this year! I have 3 adult children who make me so proud! I love to travel and share my travel experiences with my students. My latest trip was to Australia this past summer with my daughter. We visited friends that I used to work with; I worked at the Embassy of Australia in Washington DC before I became a teacher. My daughter and I had an amazing time! We got to play with kangaroos and pet a koala! We also got to see Phantom of the Opera at the Sydney Opera House!
