I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Samantha: Markham tutor

Certified Tutor

I graduated from Central Magnet School (near MTSU) in 2020. I'm currently a senior at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, majoring in English: Creative Writing! I've always had a passion and a talent for English, and for a time I thought it was for languages altogether; I took seven years of French (high school and college level) and two years of Spanish. After ending my academic career with French, I realized the passion I had came more from a fantastic teacher more than the subject matter. This led me to realize that I wanted to be
a teacher myself. Since English has always been my favorite and where I carry the most skill, I'm pursuing a career as an English teacher! That being said, I have plenty of expertise to tutor both in English and in French. I have experience as a summer camp counsellor, a teacher's aide for my French classes, in addition to classroom observation experience through the Education department of my university. While I'm new in experience to teaching/tutoring, I completed a Psychology thesis in my senior year of high school centered around Education, and I have done extensive reading about teaching strategies and learning styles. I'm striving to create a welcoming environment that generates excitement about, and engagement with, the material at hand. I like to keep students involved through discussion and other interactives during instruction (the interactives will depend on the age group). My teaching philosophy is very student-focused, and I'm very excited to be working with students!

Hobbies

I enjoy both reading and writing, as well as movies and music. I love anything crafty; I like to crochet, paint, and anything else I can get my hands on. I also love to cook! If I'm not working or at school, I'm more than likely at home hanging out with the cats and dog there!
